Jose Tomas received a 17-pint blood transfusion after the half-tonne bull plunged one of its horns 10cm into the fighter's left thigh, puncturing a vein and an artery.

Tomas had bled so profusely that bullring officials even appealed to the crowd to come forward for transfusions if they matched his relatively rare A- blood type.

Doctors later spent three hours trying to repair a femoral artery perforated in the fight in the city of Aguascalientes.

The director of the Miguel Hidalgo hospital, Geronimo Aguayo, said Tomas had shown "slight improvement" but remains in a grave condition.

Mexican television footage showed the acclaimed fighter being caught out by a quick turn from the animal during the bout, which was being held amid celebrations for an important national festival.

Story

Now, I'm certainly not an animal rights activist, but I never have been able to see the point of bullfighting.

Harsh as it may seem, someone who likes to torture animals doesn't deserve to live in all honesty and I hope one day something like this will bring about a ban on such sports, although I doubt it. Spain should stick to it's football instead, it's not as if they have a poor choice of teams really is it :p

What are your thoughts on bullfighting?

I don't really agree with bull fighting, it seems a bit archaic in this day and age. They torture the bull to the delight of the crowd only to kill the bull later, I'm glad when the bull gets his revenge and hurt the matadors.

HE messed with a bull and ended up coming off for the worse. He was stupid to get in the ring with it anyway, not to mention the barbarism of it all.

Serves him right. I don't agree with this "sport" at all and quite like to hear when the bull gets its own back. It's gonna get killed anyway it may as well take someone with it!

I'm pretty much not shocked by anything - being a 22 year old in the 21st century and all that....

But on my latest visit to Spain i watched a bullfight on TV and i've got to admit it's pretty shocking stuff to be televising on a Saturday afternoon. Without going into too much detail, it ended when he stabbed the bull in the shoulder (looked to be right where the front leg joined the torso - where is suspect it's easy to do it....) and did it a couple of times until eventually he finished it off by what looked like a thrust in the eye....

Pretty gruesome stuff and as mentioned by the OP, i just don't see the point in it really.

Good on the bull.

I feel the same way when an idiot gets hurts in the running of the bulls, sympathy factor = 0.

Can't say the bull fighting appeals to me but in the same instance it doesn't bother me that much either. The bulls that are picked for "fights" live a lavish lifestyle up to the day of the fight. Traditionally, if the bull wins, then it is let free, but no doubt these days things are different.

I don't support it, but I'm not vehemently against it. Still, if you're going to go into a ring with a bull, then you take your chances with you. Good on the bull for winning that round. :)

What are your thoughts on bullfighting?
I think they usually slash some tendons/muscle tissue on the back of the bull's neck before the fight starts. I think it's supposed to weaken their gouging ability and make it a little easier for the fighter to predict and out manoeuvre the bull. Yet the matador still couldn't avoid being gored. Time for a change of career, me thinks :p

you realise the bulls are drugged and usually they have lost so much blood before the "fight" even starts that they arent really capable of much anyway.

they dont fight bulls that are fit and healthy

maybe at one time the fights were real and very dangerous these days its just a big show like american wrestling
