A friend of the family of mine has got a laptop which is bascially dead and its only a year and a half old. He brought it over last night and basically I sorted it ;

Installed Windows 7 & Fully updated
Installed Kaspersky 2010 & Fully updated
Installed Open Office

It all took me about 2 hours to do but he has really important data on there which I managed to avoid deleting. I'm rubbish when it comes to them saying "How much do I owe you?"

He just rang and asked me how much. I told him it took me about 4-5 hours (I know, tut tut) he said he would pay me £15 a hour as he's self employeed and thats what he charges people that works for him. Family friend and I don't want to pull his pants down and i've just got myself a house and his job is bacially a handyman so he might come in useful in future.

Thanks :)

He offered you £15 an hour for 4-5 hours work, if you think his services may come in handy in the future, tell him £50 seems fine? That way he thinks you're being kind, but still charging for more time than it took you.

4 * £15 = £60
5 * £15 = £75

Not sure why you're saying "but still charging for more time than it took you."

Tell him that he owes you a favour and leave it at that. Tell him that he can pay you back in the future with something around the house.

Never charge friends for something that only cost you time is how I look at these things.

Depends,

Sometimes I charge nothing and leave it as a 'you owe me', especially if they have a trade.

Someone I don't know, I charge £60 for doing the above

If he offered £15 an hour that would be £75 by your working.

I'd say don't worry about an hourly rate, just give us £50 as you are friend/family and be happy with it. He saves a bit, you get money for your time and everyone is happy!

I was thinking £50 is a reasonable amount. I've usually done this sort of stuff for free but I know he'll need me in the future too as he's a noob when it comes to anything like this but the man can do any type of DIY and I suck at DIY :p

Not really a 'friend friend' mate.

If they are fit women, I charge nothing. Friends of friends used to be a crate of beer but haven't done it for 10 years.

so £50 sounds right, £30 if your being honest since it took you only 2 hours.

Oh, he can afford it I know that much is true. I think when he gives me £80, i'll give him £30 back then. £50 seems fair to me.

He's self employed and appreciates the time you've spent working for him.

I'd personally take what he's offered as it's clear he has no issues with it.

In future though, best thing to do is think up a fixed price per job, or an hourly rate.

2 * £15 = 30

£50 > £30, so if he tells the guy he'll accept £50, he's 'still charging for more time than it took'
