What would you charge?

I was in a similar situation the other day, never normally charge people but the amount of referalls i get is getting silly now, housemates and family free, but now having to charge others.

Took me a few hours of work, most of it progress bars, and i said 20 squid, he gave me 30 and i was chuffed with that. May have to rethink things based on the info here.

Just remember though, losing a few quid is worth it to have tradesmen owing you favours.

Thats what im thinking. Simple stuff like, curtain rails etc. I don't have tools nor the knowledge whereas it'll take him 5 minutes after his day at work. He's already offered to help out.

Or they are fit women or have fit mates! Works a treat. They start putting the word round you are a fantastic computer fixer and they you get nice invites.;)

Don't charge him, just call on his services in the future. At the end of the day, re-installs are a fairly long winded job but for half that time you can bugger off and do something else while a loading bar fills up.

It's a difficult one as it depends on how well you know the person and if they're prepared to return an equivalent favour.

If you can, never mix money and things like this with friends/family. Otherwise you're good. However, if you find that you're inundated with small requests for PC assistance like printing for someone or plugging in their new mouse, you should start charging, that soon makes them try easy things themselves first! They're not designed to be hard to use!

Id just take 30 quid for the reinstall, money in your pocket and a happy tradesman at hand for favours later (bare in mind his time wont be free either but at least you can help make it cheaper)

I've done quite a bit of this type of stuff for the older engineers in the office, I tell them it doesnt matter but they normally buy me a bottle of wine or something.

Wish they would get beer :(

Your fixing the wrong people's computers then ;)

I once did a male mate's one and he had loads of pics and videos of his (fit) missus :D

ANd before you say I shouldn't have looked it went along these lines:

Him: I can;t get my computer to print anymore
Me: I'll be round to have a look, get the beers in
Me: It prints fine, what are you trying to print?
Him: This picture.....*clicks open*
Him: I shouldn't have realy showed you that one should I?

I propose a trade, ten of mine for that particular one of yours!!!!

I'm thinking £80 is a little excessive, £50 is too if I didn't need him in the future so now im thinking more £30

Just tell him 20 quid and a pint when he sees you in the pub.

And when he asks why say most of the time was spent watching the TV while it installed and you corrected bit of it.

All said and done £30 for a few hours of progress bars and pressing a few buttons (to us I.T people) is a decent amount.

Perhaps go back to him and say "Look, as you are a mate I'll charge you a flat fee of £30 for the lot, but don't forget you owe me!".
