Id definately say the Focus ST is worth a look.

Great character and noise with the 5 pot. Supposidly rock solid Volvo engine and ive not seen or read about any real serious faults with them.

If hot hatch is what your are looking for then imho its better than the alternatives like the Type R or VXR.

Plenty of them about for sale, pistonheads has a couple of hundred plus. 15k should get you a Facelift St2 with 10-20k miles

Just dont go in to it looking for economy. It can be ok if you are plodding about, problem is its a little addictive booting it about so dont be surprised with sub 20mpg. Can definately get 35+ with sensible driving.

BMWs are well built, but not necessarily reliable. Jap cars are generally reliable, but not that well built.

Pretty obvious, no? The current shape S3 is above the OP's budget and obviously he isn't going to be after the 90's S3, so any A3 is exactly that - an A3. An A3 is not a hot hatchback really, is it? Not in the way a Focus ST is.

Ah sorry, didn't read. I thought you said that an S3 was nothing like an ST (which I disagreed with, as they're both well built hot hatches with reasonably similar performance).

But no, there's no way i'd consider any of the A3s a hot hatch. The 2.0 petrol is close to warm hatch territory though.

Apparently they're renaming it the STD for the new model. Not because it's a diesel, but because of the high number of slappers that you will violate on the back seats whilst owning one.

I've driven an A3 V6. It would be my choice over an ST - but thats because it isnt really a hot hatch and I'm not really a hot hatch person. For your average hot hatch fan the A3 V6 wont do it.

In terms of looks and "sporty" kit no, but in terms of speed yes.

They can be brought for around 6k to 15k

I was more thinking about it how drives - it was a nose heavy cruiser not a B road weapon, really.

Clio would be a great step up IMO,alltho that isnt difficult the fiesta ST is such a pants car

Nope I have old S3, A3 v6's are quick but plain in the styling department.
