Hello all, I have a ASUS GTX480 on pre-order and have read about so many members here changing the heat sink paste for something better:)
This is basically a warning for those who will be purchasing the asus gtx480 card.
Basically today I decided to email ASUS to see if the warrenty on these cards will get affecting if you change the paste ?

Just had an email back.....

Dear mrix

It will void your warranty.

Kindest Regards,

ASUSTeK UK

So for a very expensive card it could be very risky

As far as I was aware, this has always been the case? I've heard some manufacturers allowing cooler changes though (EVGA maybe?). Most people can't tell when you put the cooler back on, I wonder if Asus would even check what paste was used?

re:

Apparently from what I have read within these forums some will allow the coolers to be changed.
But this is just a warning for those that are not aware even just changing the paste will void your warrenty with ASUS.
To be honest I was not fully aware of this and will certainly not be changing any paste for sometime lol

This is fairly standard practice.

However, I reckon 9 times out of ten, they'll never know a paste as been changed.

It's to cover themselves when an idiot changes the paste and breaks the card.

Yeah pretty standard generally, there are a couple of brands that will let you change the cooler without voiding warranty - but even then if you read the small print it usually only applies to cards sold as "for" overclocking.

While they will certainly void it if you go out of your way to inform them of the meddling, I assure you that there is no way they take the time to disassemble the card upon RMA as a matter of course without good reason, let alone verify the origin of the thermal compound.

Furthermore, once they test the card and it refuses to work you will get a replacement. In all likelihood, a whole different department deals with salvaging/repairing broken cards.

But naturally, its a gamble. Depends on how thorough/nitpicky they choose to be. Nonetheless, I reckon one would get away with it more often than not.

They might not know if you've changed the thermal paste but they might see if you've unscrewed the screws.

Good point, certainly plausible. Still, I'm holding both a X1950 and a HD5770 right now and it doesn't seem like there's any apparent way to tell if the screws were undone as far as AMD goes at least.

Then again, for all I know green might actually pull something like that, it would suit them.

my old 4870x2 had a large sticker over all the screws on the back.

I ruined that stocker so in the end i removed it with rubbing compound and when it came to actually requireing an RMA there was not an issue
