Was 16-bit the best era?

You can't beat the Amiga for 16bit era.

The big greats like Cinemaware, Team 17, Bitmap Bros, Microprose, Anco, Sensible Soft, Westwood to name a few.

Midwinter and Hunter hold special memories for me. Not forgetting Powerdrome, the forerunner to Wipeout.

The AmigaOS was also the 1st true multi-tasking OS on any micro. All on a humble MC68000 @ 7.15mhz :D

i think the 16bit age was the best, so many great games and so much variety! its just a shame that most of the companies making games at the time have either gone bust or been swallowed whole by the likes of EA.

I spent so much time playing Sonic as a kid it has to be. But that is probably just my age rather than it being better.

But Sonic seemed so much more difficult back then! When I play it now, it seems far easier than it used to be.

N64 era without a doubt. 4 player splitscreen was truely awesome and a lot of the games were built around that. You just will not get that anymore in todays digital age plus the fact im too old now and too tied down to get 4 friends together for a bash at my house. :(

Snap.

The amount of time me and my mates put into Goldeneye was obscene.

Every console generation had its perks, I mean games now are more complex, amazing gameplay...

More complex? Really?

I've found the opposite. Games today are really simplified compared to games of the last few years.

However I'm looking at all games, including PC games, when I say that. Perhaps PC games have suffered the most here since - barring a few exceptions - console games were never particularly complex anyhow.

Anyway, I'd say my favourite console gen was PS1/PS2.

Amiga was my fave too. I can't remember how many hours I spent on Speedball 2 and sensible soccer.

And monkey island 2 was the greatest game!

European Football was better (can't remember the proper title) but if your player ran into the goal post, he would be laying on the ground for a few minutes :D

We're unquestionably going through a golden era of gaming, I've been gaming since my Dad brought home a BBC B Microcomputer back in about 1982, and I can't ever recall another period where there was such quality available across the board.
I think it helps that this seems to be the gen that gaming has started to genuinely mature.

I'm glad someone mentioned the BBC Micro. I had the B model as well. Favourite games were Elite, Exile, Repton Infinity. Rather shockingly, I didn't convert from BBC to a PC (Pentium II) until 1999!

Bah the old ps1/n64 era was just as good as the 16 bit era, but they we're really the best eras for gaming...

The only reason some of the games are hard to play now are because modern graphics are just so much better our expectations of games have changed. I still miss the days i found goldeneye and perfect dark the most exciting first person shooters released (and half life). Same for pokemon released in that era too, there's a magic (rose tinted glasses on here) that just isnt present in current games, in even worse terms it now feels like games are expected to sell and we are expected to be told what to enjoy opposed to some games being true classics for being something and everyone playing it and judging it on that alone (poor wording but basically i keep thinking how goldeneye's multiplayer was a last min addition to the final product and how it changed multiplayer forever...)
