Morning guys,

As im sure you're all aware there are a lot of problems in Thailand at the moment, which is problematic as myself and 2 friends are supposed to be going there for 3 weeks from the 22nd of May.
We flights booked with ebookers and a travel tour booked with another UK based company.
I have checked our travel insurance and it seems to exclude anything arising out of civil unrest etc :/

What would you guys suggest we do?!

Regards, Rob

if a country is not safe to travel too surely you would have grounds for a refund?

i really wouldnt go, even if you end up losing money, if that country kicks off big time your going to effectively be in the middle of a ****storm and you may not come home alive for one reason or another.

when FCo post this on their website:
We advise against all but essential travel to the whole of Thailand.
then you know to avoid avoid avoid

its basically turning into a 3 way battle between the army, redshirts and anti redshirts - its going to get more and more voilent unfortuantely.

There is no need to cancel a trip to Thailand. I've been here for the last two months and despite what the media or whoever has led you to believe the whole country is not going nuts running around with pitch forks. It is very isolated in a small part of Bangkok, and if you were anywhere else you wouldn't even know anything was happening.

I was in Bangkok when the riots happened and 21 people got killed. Managed to get some good photos of helicopters dropping tear gas and tanks being torn apart.

thats stupid advice...sorry.
the demonstrations are throughout thailand not just in one area...despite what the mainstream media would have you believe.

Bangkok is where the main demonstrations are occuring, infact Bangkok would be probably be ok too so long as the hotspots were avoided, I was there during the 2006 coup and just avoided the trouble areas and it was fine

I really can't see tanks rolling onto any of the small islands tbh ;)

anyways he doesn't have to listen to my opinion

Problem is that once the Foreign Office advises against going, your travel insurance is null and void. If nearer the time your holiday got cancelled by the tour company you would not get a bean back. Same if you got stranded there.

Safer to alter your holiday plans IMO.

If the tour company cancelled they would have to refund surely?

I went the other year during protests, apart from some areas being sealed off the protesters and people are really friendly. a lot of the locals are more upset by the fact that the protests drive away the tourism.

I'm sorry but your talking **** its only in BK really and thats a VERY small part of BK. just avoid MBK center and that area. The rest is fine. Chang Mai is fine , the islands are fine , south part of the Thailand is fine. I should know I was there up until 4 days ago( was there for 31 days overstayed my visa by a day oopps)

Just avoid the crowds. As for travel advice website , they are on the side of caution. they advise not to go to indonesia even Bali for crying out loud.

Let common sense prevail.... :p

My sister is due to fly out to Bangkok on thursday morning and doesn't know what to do now as it's too late to cancel / change the flight plans (it's the start of a 4 month world wide trip).

They're going to contact the agency who they booked through tomorrow to see what they say but it's unlikely anything can be done this late it seems :(

They've been looking forward to this trip for over a year - it was all booked way before the trouble flared up to any significant degree!

I think most travel insurance policies will pay for cancellation if the FCO advise against travel. As long as the booking was made before the FCO warning.

Well hopefully they can get some kind of definitive answer out of the travel company tomorrow morning!

They're a bit peeved to say the least at the moment!

Talk about spanner in the works - right at the last minute (near as dammit).

Try daily life in Colombia, you'll get threatened at knifepoint in traffic lights (they send in kids first to get you to open the window and give money as that's v common anyway, or they'll key your car if you don't roll down, etc), have regular bomb scares (and some real bombs), and live in secure compounds 24/7.

But if you use common sense and are aware of the above, you're fine. Same everywhere.

Go, stay out of the troublesome areas, and enjoy.

May be biased because I'm going out soon too.
