Any homeplug adapters compatible with extension leads?

Hi all,

I'm after a set of homeplug adapters to connect my router (downstairs) with my media pc (in my bedroom upstairs).

The problem is that I only have 1 socket near each piece of equipment, so I use an extension multi plug thing so that I have multiple plug sockets.

Are there any homeplug adapters out there that allow you to connect through an extension multi plug lead (not sure on the correct name)?

Many thanks,

Edward

The manufacturers probably say not to use extension leads for worries of surge protectors and drops in signal. I'd bet most of them work well enough with a normal short extension lead, can't see as its that different to a mains spur. If not try a double socket converter.

I've set up two home plug systems which had one end going into an extension block & work fine.

Some adapters will work off an extension cable but the official answer will always be no (but like said before it works sometimes) basically manufacturers say no because home-plug systems use a "bus" network and anyone who remembers the old coaxial BNC days remembers how the adapters would play up if somebody put a cable between the NIC and the "T" piece

Basically running a home-plug adapter off an extension cable is "bad networking practice" but it will work sometimes

i bought a pair of the 4-port switched 85mb netgear ones from a competitor a couple of weeks back as they were reduced from £90 to £40. one is in the lounge on the ground floor connected to my vm router via a 6-way extension lead, and the other is in my study on the first floor connected to my pc via an 8-way extension lead. works without any issues at all.

Are you able to tell me the model number for these Netgear homeplugs please?

Thanks,

Personally I would avoid using any powerline kit at all. I have now tested 2 pieces and to be honest I never got more than 4.2MB/s transfer. This was from 1 room to the next room on teh same ring. With yoursetup being upstairs I would say you are going to get less than that and then with an extension you are going to get a lot of noise which will drop rate down even more.

Depending on what you are going to stream over network but with those plugs you can forget about hd qualilty movies straight off.

I don't mean to be rude but you either have a problem with the homeplug adapters you were using or a problem with the wiring in your home

I have 3 cheepo brand 200mb homeplugs connecting a router in the dining room, a PS3 in the living room and a switch in my bedroom that is on a separate power circuit and I can stream 1080p video from a HP mediasmart server in my room to the PS3 while using a PC in my room to download games from steam at 800KB/s and everything works fine
