Build up to Virgin London Marathon 2010

my mate is running it and has done sweet FA prep he thinks he will be fine cos he did it 8 years ago and didnt train, I think hes gonna die!

Well they've been cheering solidly now for a good few hours. I'm really enjoying the music and the poor jokes the DJ is busting in the mic! :D :p

Unfortunately one guy stacked it, but good sportsmanship from another runner helped him back up on his feet, and they both continued running!

Anyway, here's a mobile phone image:

Well I was there yesterday cheering on the masses. It's such an amazing atmosphere there. Although I've been living in London for many years I've never been to one, and always avoided it as it's a pain for most people who aren't interested... howeve this year I had a vested interest as a very good friend (Lostkat) was running. Wow, what an atmosphere - people cheering people on, no matter who they were, amputees running, funny costumes, the pain in people's eyes, the grit and determination in their eyes too, and the cheers spurring them on was just incredible.

Huge amount of respect to all/any of you that did the marathon. whilst I no doubt have the fitness for it, I doubt I'd be able to do it, certainly not in a respectable time. I am quite in awe of it all. Well done and congrats. :)

well, how'd you all do?

Well.... I'm not very good at race reports so in brief I fluffed it :p

I came in at 3:05:01, which although a PB I was a little disappointed not to go sub 3. I was a few seconds ahead of myself on pace and feeling great at the half way mark, eased off a little up to the 20 mile mark and then lost it and slowed, especially in the final 7km.

However I do know what I need to do to achieve my goal and determined to go sub 3 in Notts in Sept or London 2011.

5km splits for interest:

START TIME 09:45:07
5K 00:20:49
10K 00:41:36
15K 01:02:37
20K 01:23:46
HALF 01:28:12
25K 01:44:39
30K 02:06:03
35K 02:28:57
40K 02:54:09
FINISH 03:05:01

That's enought about me, how'd you get on Lostkat?

Aww man that sucks!! Missed it by 5mins :-( Still a great effort though.
At least you know what to do next time now!

Well done on the PB FB, absolutely brilliant effort. Know how you feel about not cracking the hour mark because I was a few mins off breaking 4 hrs, but it was my first marathon and I did bloody well so I've still got a stupid grin on my face regardless.

I was in pen 8 on blue start, so waaaay back in the field. It stressed me out quite a lot because I was constantly dodging and weaving around people who were much slower than me. In fact, I spent most of the race overtaking people. I guess they don't have much choice though since a huge amount of people put 4:30 on their entry forms. I still managed a pretty constant pace all the way around though, even when I hit the wall at mile 23-25 and just wanted to give up. It felt like I was barely moving, but my Garmin pace says otherwise. Thankfully my friends were at mile 25 and that really put the wind in my sails and helped me push on.

I had 3 goals in my head. The first was just to get through it and finish. The second was a time I would be happy with. That was 4:30. The third was my ultimate dream time if everything went perfectly, and that was 4:00. I was 3 minutes 32 seconds off that, so I really can't be upset or annoyed.

START TIME 09:55:55
5K 00:29:15
10K 00:58:09
15K 01:26:56
20K 01:55:18
HALF 02:01:23
25K 02:23:54
30K 02:53:09
35K 03:22:04
40K 03:51:16
FINISH 04:03:32

The amount of support on the route was absolutely incredible. I had my name on my shirt and to hear everyone shouting at your is just so motivating. I loved it (even miles 23-25 looking back) and would do it again in a heartbeat.

My legs, however, are NOT happy today. My hips, glutes, knees and toes really ache today and I'm hobbling around in much pain. Still, I have my medal and I'm a very VERY happy bunny. I am officially a marathon runner :) *proud*

Just found out that I broke my club's London Marathon course record for the ladies AND was within 2 mins of the club marathon ladies record. Going to smash them to pieces next time :) Just entered Leicester Marathon... erk!

Wow that's amazing guys. Shame you both missed the hour mark by a few minutes. Are you both intending to run again next year? Will you get priority as you've run before or are you just shoved back in the draw with the rest of us?

Yes, I would do it again in a heartbeat. Back in the draw though I'm afraid. You have to be super quick to get an automatic entry. My friend has never run a marathon before, but because she is sub 1h30 for a HM, apparently she gets an automatic place for London next year. Nice!!!

Having said that, I didn't enter the draw last year because I had absolutely no intention of ever running a marathon at the time. I won a club entry at my running club's Christmas bash :)

I'm still guaranteed an entry as I'm classed as good for age, so will be back there in 2011.

Congrats again LostKat, will join you in Leics if I'm on hols when Notts runs.

Cheers, Chris.

Fantastic. I forgot about GFA :D I'm 13 mins off that at the moment as it's 3h50 for me, so another target to aim for. Think that one can wait until next year's marathon season though :D

I did Leics half last year as my first HM, so I'm looking forward to the full this year... apart from the last bit up New Walk. Hopefully my hilly training will make it much much easier for me this year though :)

Well done guys and gals!
