hi all

just put together a pc and now looking for a good graphics card
ideally would like it run latest games at 1920x1200 but don't wanna spend more then 170-180

computer spec is

and phenom x4 955be not overlooked yet looking into setting i need
asus evo board
4gb corrsair RAM
not sure on psu but can always upgrade too think its around 600 watts

so what card you guys reckon something good don't wanna be buying another for at least 12-24mths

Yea, either the card Admiral Huddy suggests or increase your budget for this.

There is a GPU which almost falls into your price range - the 5830. However, few people here would recommend it.

fairly new back on the pc scene and things have changed a lot!!

am i right in saying the gpu cards run independent to the cpu so making them better?
if that is the case im looking for GPU card around 170-180

also are ATI better then NVIDIA?

Personally, as far as PC gaming is concerned, i don't think a lot has changed. I'm still using a 3 1/2 year old 8800GTX at 1920x1200 no problems. I've just finished Fallout3, Bioshock2 and CoDMW2 at same settings with plenty of AA/AF. And yesterday started playing L4D 2 :)

As far as GPU/CPU independence.. no.. The CPU still pushes data to the GPU for processing although newer Nvidia cards this is less so.

As for ATI over NVIDIA debate, this is an ongoing arguement really. NVIDIA it seems have built a card for the future but is well over priced, over powered and not much faster than its ATI rivals. ATI on the other hand have the crown for all out bang for buck.

cool might have a look into getting the 5830 or 5850

do u know where i can find power ratings for the cards?

would i see any benefit getting slighty cheaper card but having 2 of them ?

sorry for all the questions!! just dont wanna buy something thats not upto the job!!

I doubt a 5770 will last you 12 months playing the latest games at 1920x1080, especially with more games using dx11, I'd say save a bit more and get a 5850. If that isn't an option get a 5770 now and when you start struggling to run games with the eyecandy and aa/af and another 5770 in CF.

5770 - 108W TDP
5830 - 175W TDP
5850 - 151W TDP (Yes the 5830 consumes more power than a 5850)

You should be ok with a 600W PSU depending on what brand it is.

Don't bother with the 5830. Everyone was expecting it to be the great bang-for-buck compromise to fill the large gap in the market between the 5770 and the 5850. However, when it arrived it was close to the 5770 in performance, yet close to the 5850 in price! In other words, terrible value for money. So the advice is usually to save some cash and get a 5770, or raise the budget to get a 5850. Both represent excellent bang-for-buck. I'd say if you can justify the cash, the 5850 would create a nice balanced system with your CPU and RAM and be awesome for the latest games. A 5770 will start to struggle fairly soon on games coming out in the near future imho.

Well the 5830 is exacly in the middle of a 5770 and 5850.

If it was me? I'd save for abit longer and go for a 5850, they can overclock massively and can be found for quite cheap.

Although a 5770 is still an amazing card, just don't expect it to do full DX11 in one years time.

yeah gonna raise the extra cash for the 5850

noticed different makes of the ATI 5850

GIGABYTE
POWERCOLOUR
ASUS
SAPPHIRE

does it matter what brand? or which is better one to go for??

will it be ok on the PSU ive put link on few threads up?

Personally, I think the best ATI brand is ASUS.

They have a 3 year warranty when all the others seem to only have 2 years and their cards are made so you can overclock them very well - and all this overclocking is covered by the warranty.

That PSU should be OK, its dual 6 pin PCI connectors strongly suggest that it can handle a 5850.

It's not the Rolls Royce of PSUs, and many on this forum swear only the Rolls Royce will do. Having said that OCUK don't sell cheap nasty tat, so yours will be fine in reality. 450W should be plenty for a single GPU rig.

will it have enough amps on the 12v rail to power the 5850. Im not too sure, check the sticker on the side mate! :)
