In January and February I did some freelance work for my old company and i have yet to be paid for that work.

As that was the first time i did any freelance work, i was wondering how long is it normally until the company pays me?

I have emailed them a few times, but no response. I will try and ring them tomorrow.

What is my options if they keep delaying to pay me?

Two months? I'd say that's taking the **** by any stretch of the imagination.

Send them a letter if you can, recorded, informing them of your intention to begin legal proceedings unless paid within 10 working days or something.

Freelance work is a pain in the behind for this very reason... people always seem to "forget" about or try to wriggle out of paying :S once work is complete I would expect payment within a week maybe 10 days tops.

Freelancer, i would say you get paid as soon as the the work is done, i think they are taking advantage of you.

Depends on the terms of the contract.

Have you sent an invoice, if you havent then dont expect to be paid until you do. If you have were the terms 30 days??

Many companies dont pay for 30-60 (some even 90+) days after the invoice is presented, so unless you specified a timescale and presented one promptly then i wouldnt expect you to be paid any time soon.

ok guys, i will chase them up tomorrow.

I handed in my invoice shortly after the work was complete.

Freelance work i have done in the past was 3 months from sending the invoice to getting the money. Other places will pay you in Feb for what you work in Jan so its really company dependant.

Can depend massively from company to company, and depending on your relationship with them. My last reimbursement was around 3 months later.

In most cases, when working on a solely professional level, you'd expect payment within 14 days of invoice, max.

2 months and not answering emails is discourteous, you need to send them a recorded delivered letter with a final demand for the sum.

In agreement with that man. Sounds like they are just hoping you'll forget or doing the classic 'lazy finance' attitude that too many companies have...

Normally instantly, I find the biggest problem is how long it takes to carry out trade missions between sectors... not to mention defending against pirates.

On your invoice what payment terms did you add on?

Some companies have a 60 day end of month payment schedule unless you state on the invoice your terms. Some even can take as long as 120 days EOM.

I used to get a cheque within a couple of days of sending an invoice in. The companies I worked for were usually quite good.

I'm assuming you've sent them an invoice, most places I worked for wouldn't write cheques without an invoice.

Looks like i will have to write a formal letter next. How many days should i demand them to pay me after receiving the letter?

Would hiring a solicitor be my next option after the letter?
