thinking of this spec?

Gaming and laptop don't fix too well together, overheating issue making laptop not the most ideal computer for long hours of gaming. And as the sayings goes..."you'd have to spend around double the amount of money of a gaming desktop to get a gaming laptop of the equivalent performance".

This is what I say to people who ask me why I don't have a laptop. My dad keeps asking me if I want one but I really see no point. I wouldn't be able to game on a laptop he would want to buy for me and I wouldn't take it into uni. The only time I really want to have a laptop is when I'm too lazy and want to lie in bed and watch a film. Plus I wouldn't be able to build a laptop and where's the fun in that? ;)

thank you to all.
i am sorry, i forgot to say please dont spec AMD as i am a INTEL kind of guy.
some of you have added sata dvd drives? i have 2 ide ones, are they of no use? i dont need a monitor as i will keep the 22" one he has now.
the size of the HDrive is not important i only went for the black one coz of the cache, but i dont want to pay for ssd.
the old psu is the antec true blue 470 i think.
i do not O/C any more so it will all run at stock [will the retail cooler be ok]
no one has mentioned the vaio, is that coz this build will be stupidly faster?

i would like a gigabyte mb and ATI g/card but the rest is up to you lot.
i would like the best set up for a max of £900 at my door please.

thanks again guys...

ps. i say ATI coz i think you get more for your money?
So to summarise...
1. Not going to overclock the CPU
2. Intel only
3. Since CPU not gonna be overclocked and stucked at stock speed, Crossfire is pointless and unnecessary

So your option is pretty much down to the i5 750 no Crossfire build. Stock cooler that comes with CPU is poor, and can be loud and annoying as the fan spin faster when the CPU is under load/get hot. Since you are not overclocking, I'm changing the CPU cooler from the Titan cooler to the Arctic Freezer Pro Rev. 2 (£16), which would still be quiest under load, as well as cool your CPU reasonably well. Also, I'm lowering the PSU to Antec TruePower 550W, as it is sufficient for no crossfire.:

why a micro atx mb, my friend

Because according to review, that board is one of the best overclocker for the 1156 platform. The bigger boards give extra PCI slots, but it's pointless if you don't need them, plus they consume more power. They are pretty much the same speed, but not overclock as great as the UD2 I quoted. I know you said you not planning to overclock, but you might change you mind in the future.

Just to let you know that the 5850 is pretty much already on the perfect balance with the stock speed i5 750 without bottlenecking one another. Should you decide to upgrade your graphic card to one that's faster than the 5850 in the future, you would HAVE TO overclock your CPU otherwise it will bottleneck the graphic card.

The OP wants to keep the budget to under £900 and the Core i7 build is nearly £1000.
Yea...unfortunately that option ain't gonna get anywhere close to £900, unless we can ditch the Window 7 :D

It's a real shame that the i5 750 overclock bundles is way overpriced...it's only like £20-£30 cheaper than that i7 920 overclock bundle.

How does this look?

+£43 for a student version of Windows 7 Professional (student deal)

= £868 shipped

- I didn't include a PSU as the antec True Blue is actually a good bit of kit and will handle a single GPU system fine. Same with the existing IDE DVD drive - this will also work fine.

Edit: Looking at the PSU it is good quality, but unfortunately rather old - i'm not sure it will be able to deliver enough power to the graphics card on the 12V rail. I will change the spec to include a good PSU.

thanks, i know i said £900 but i dont mind a bit over

Looks good, though I would suggest spending a bit more on a mouse if the machine is mainly for gaming. You could pay for this by getting a cheaper version of Windows 7.

I suggest giving "windows 7 professional student upgrade uk" a google.

This is a good gaming mouse.
