ok maybe this will turn into a fanboy war , dont know dont care. Here is my story:
I have been a strong apple iphone supporter for years now, originally an ipod then ipod touch, and moved to 1st gen iphone, then upgraded to an even bigger 1st gen iphone and then moved to a iphone 3g.
im with o2 on their iphone £20 a month contract and can leave anytime no penalty.

i did love my iphone but im consistantly feeling like im banging my head against the wall with it, everytime i use it, it feels slower. the app store is basically full of **** and apples stance on restricting even basic utilites that were hacked ages ago (themes, widgets etc) is an utter joke.

i love itunes, its been a faithful player and media sorter for years but if i had to use something else i would.

so i saw the desire and its been getting rave reviews and looks frankly amazing and completely open and just what a phone should be!

i know the new iphone is out in a few months, but from what iv seen and heard - it looks again like typical apple too little too late.

has anyone else made the iphone - htc switch? thoughts/opinions??? is it worth it??

is their any good offers on the desire at the moment??

Interesting that you complain about apps, because the appstore is amazing. Honestly, you're in for a big shock if you switch to any other platform. Not sure how much you're into gaming, but be prepared for another skydive in terms of choice and quality there...

However, in pretty much every other way possible, I personally think that android is the superior platform. That why I'm going for the desire. Give it time and I'm pretty sure it will start to match Apple's Appstore. Games are another story, though but I personally have no desire to game on my mobile phone.

Whatever you go for in the end, enjoy. = )

Did the switch and have not looked back. Amazing bit of kit with a rock solid OS. Never crashed once and just like the Iphone, works. Luckily I found better replacement apps than I had on the Iphone. Took some finding but very suprised with the quality and they were free.

Go for it.

no im not complaining about apps - just that the app store is full of **** made by 10 year olds for 10 year olds.
i have 3 pages of apps on my iphone i only use one mostly and thats facebook - games etc mean nothing to me, its just a pointless distraction on a phone and as long as i have podcasts im happy.
i understand that the andriod store isnt fully on the go yet - but theyv promised 130,000 by the end of this year so im happy enough about that.

how do you expect the apps to be any different?

Because most of them are free, and the vast majority of the ones that you do pay for are just 'donation' versions of a free app without ads, in keeping with the Open Source movement. Anyway, the point being that if you're doing something for free then you're doing it because you enjoy it. And if you're doing it because you enjoy it then you want other people to enjoy it too, so you will put what you can into it to get the best possible out.

In theory, at least...

This really. I bought a HTC Desire and have taken it back and kept the iphone. There just wasnt a major amount different if you just use it as a phone and not a mini-computer as it were. I hate itunes and that is why I moved away from the iphone but as you love itunes then make sure you try the phone first!

My thoughts were:

1. Full flash isnt out yet and the flash lite that is included is poor. It cant play flash videos embedded in websites but is fine for showing banner ads. I just turned it off to avoid the banner ads so in that respect it is the same as an iphone. They say Flash 10.1 will be out at "some point" but havent set a date.

2. The interface just isnt as polished as an iphone interface. All the menus look the same in the different windows and it just feels like its not bolted together from different parts.

3. Emailing is better on the iphone if you are an enterprise user. You cant simply search the global address list for users and see a list pop up and email one. You have to type them in, find them, then add them to your address book and then email them. This means each time you email a contact at work they end up in your address book! Before the fan boys jump on this just look here - http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4602

4. Talking of fanboys, I've noticed so far that the fanboys of Android are a lot like the Linux ones. They are normally extremely aggressive in their views that Android is perfect and the iphone is crap and won't be persuaded otherwise. I noticed the same aggression when I used Linux last year towards Windows. The Apple fanboys are crazy, thats for sure, but don't seem as aggressive as the Android fanboys. Just look at the guy who posted on this forum about the iphone being better than the Android and look at the responses.

I'm far from an Apple fanboy and the iphone is the only Apple product I use. I didnt bother upgrading to the 3GS as it didnt offer much more than the 3G. I probably wont upgrade to the 4G either as they will be damn expensive no doubt.

In conclusion, if you are an enterprise user looking to use it for email, use an iphone or blackberry. If you want a more basic, but polished experience use an iphone. If you want a more powerful, customisable device choose the desire as it was a LOT faster than my 3G. If you have neither phones and just want an upgrade I would go with the Android because it is cheaper but fully functional. If you have an iphone already I would just stick with it unless you get a chance to try a Desire out and definitely want a phone that is a lot more customisable but less polished.

Also, the Andoid app store is a lot smaller than the iphone one. I use a lot of apps that the Android store doesn't have so bear that in mind if you are a big app user.

I'm sure the fanboys will now tear this apart because they cannot stand to hear that god forbid someone doesn't like Android, but to be honest I don't care as I'm back to what I like so don't have to bother listening. It's my view ;)

To be honest, as you love itunes and haven't specificaly said WHY you need an Android device, then I would say just save your money and wait to see what updates come along for it in the next few months (to see if Divx and Flash 10.1 are added as promised) and by that time it will be a) Cheaper and b) you can compare it to the Iphone 4G. That's what I'mn going to do and I may well come back in a few Android updates time as the Desire's hardware itself was very good I have to say. I'd say play with a mates one first and make your mind up. If you really cant think of a reason to upgrade, then just save the money and see what a future update brings then in June make up your mind about the 4G. Just remember that the 4G will probably be $$$$

I switched from A 3g Iphone to a HTC Hero. Neither are really better than the other if my opinion. They are targetted at difference niches I always found the Hero to be a more business orirentated Iphone.

Tbf the Hero was using 6 month old tech when it was launched, tech that's now 18 months old :o Slow and burdened with Sense UI without enough RAM to make use of it, it was a miracle it sold at all :p

Same could be said of the iPhone, but lets not got there, or this will go the way of the other thread :p

Go and play with one in store. Try it for everything you'd do on an iPhone

If you want to know what Android alternatives of iPhone apps ask in the Essential Android Apps thread :)

I switched from N95 to hd2.
I did lots of geeky stuff with the n95 & the hd2 is a great continuation of that.
I was tempted with an iphone due to the support but am really enjoying the challenge of a wm phone which can do a lot more I think.
I have a friend with a hero & its a great little phone & android is sweet to use, configure & well setup for social networking.
I think the iphone has loads more support with apps but unless you're into trying a new app or game everyday then maybe android would make sense?

:P you berk.

for the record, i had an omnia for a year or so, modded the balls of it and everything.

*and ja is a mate, when you coming up btw, i finished uni :P

Ive done the switch from my Iphone 3g to a HTC hd2 and the difference was day and night.

Dont get me wrong i could go on all day but the 3g was a good phone when it came out but the HD2 does everything and more but better.
