Hi,

My insurance is due in 6 weeks or so so ive started to do a little shopping around. I currently pay around £600 fully comp on my Focus ST with my girlfriend as a named driver. The quotes im getting this time round are upwards of £950. If i want protected no claims im looking at upwards of £1000. I have got a non fault claim on my file now however that doesn't seem to make a difference in price when messing around with the figures.

Were both 24, been driving since 2004. So 6 years. Its as cheap to insure the car modified to 300bhp with Greenlight insurance as it is standard with the mainstream companies. Im absolutely gob smacked if im honest.

Has anyone else noticed a sharp increase when shopping around this year?

Russ

It sure looks like they have yes, I'm struggling to get my insurance under £900, it's due in a few weeks.

My car is group 19 but it's totally standard and everyone I have tried wants around £1k to insure it (nearer £900 if I put my Dad on as a named driver), I haven't paid a premium that high since I was about 22, I'm 26 now, been driving since I was 17 and I've never made a claim, had an accident or a driving conviction ...not even 3 points. I have 4 years no claims (I was a named driver before that).

Yeah, only managed one quote cheaper than last years. Vast majority are double last years price, I can't understand it.

World has gone to rat poop, insurance companies need to make more money to make up for losses incurred by recent economic events.

Could be wrong though.

Still, you got a quote cheaper than last years so that's a win, I'm in the same boar with only finding one insurer too give me something decent. Luckily they absolutely smashed the renewal price by my current insurer so I'm happy enough.

Mine went up slightly, i went back to them with a lower quote from another company and they matched it on the spot no specific questions asked.

Mine has dropped by £800 it seems, but that would be due to me having 1ncb and a years driving experience now :p

However, I have noticed a lot of insurers who were cheap last year are now quoting more than what they did last year, and this is with more experience.

mine has gone up £700 with my insurer on a best terms basis ie I had my NCB to use, but they're suspended because of an ongoing claim where everyone is taking forever to do anything! insurance has gone up £1700 over last year because of it, they'd better sort it out soon! My insurer seem in no rush? ARGHHH....only 2 weeks till renewal too.

Im glad im not the only one suffering with this although it gives me no satisfaction to hear it.

Just been speaking to the old man. Hes the head of finance at the co-operative group. Apparently insurance premiums are going up across the board (not just motor insurance) to account for the losses incurred this winter with the heavy snow etc. As Ev0 said. Profits this year are down and the insurance brokers need to keep their shareholders happy.

Part of the reason i didn't buy a Z$ when i bought the ST is that i didn't want premiums of around a £1000 but i guess i have no choice in the issue now.

No.

The adverse weather hs nothing to do with it.

Rates have been supressed for the last 4 to 5 years now and the bubble has burst - it's no more complex than that.

Natural disaster costs are factored into premiums anyway as there's adverse weather every year/floods every year - it's all factored in.

I'd say they have, I paid £650 (2yr NCB) last year to insure a group 16 MG ZS 180 and this year I've just paid £530 (3yr NCB) to insure a group 9 Mondeo TDCI. I'd hate to think what it'd cost to insure the MG again.

Classic car insurance hasn't gone up that i've noticed, shame they dont add to no claims bonus's though :(
£315 Fully comp for a GTO TT with mods is all good :D

Oh please, I fail to see how a bit of snow could have caused such major losses...

Indeed. Last year I renewed with Direct Line, who I've been with since I was 19, and paid £375. Just had my renewal through this morning and it's almost doubled to £725.50!

Nothing's changed as far as my circumstances are concerned. I'm still driving the same 55 Plate 2.0 TDCi Mondeo Estate as I was last year, I only do circa 8000 miles a year and I've never been involved in any accidents or claims, nor have I got any points on my licence.

However, a quick 10 minutes spent shopping around's netted me a quote of £514 with Swiftcover, and I'm sure I can do better still if I try adding my older brother to a policy.

Oh, and I "Went and Compared" too. Best they quoted me was around £900, so they don't look very bloody far for the best quote then do they? (Either that or slap 30% onto every quote for themselves)

Mine went up by a good 15% last month.

£350 to insure a poxy 1.4 Rover at 30 having been driving for 13 years without making a claim :(

ummm because people dont just claim for damages to their cars, they claim for the "whiplash" they recieved aswel christmas is an expensive month remember

Mine went down £360 to £320 even after a £1500 fault accident :-)

Westfield insurance went down from £180 to £165.

Mine is pretty much the same as last year. Nothing has changed though apart from 1 more year of NCB and no accidents since 2002.
