Hi, I haven't got my driving license yet, I am just looking at what a car is going to cost me all in, for a 21 year old new driver.

My budget for the car itself would be around the £1500 mark, though lower if possible.

It would realistically need to be a very small engine (<1.2litre).

I have seen a couple of VW Polo's, but I don't really know if they are any good for my needs? or if there is just something better, I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to cars. :p

So, I just wondered what cars you lot would recommend.

Thanks in advance for any help, Cas. :)

What are your needs, i.e. what will you be doing in this car? Commuting 50 miles a day, or shopping once per week?

Sorry - Commuting, which will be ~20 miles a day, and also just general trips IE; A trip from say sheffield to EG: Whitby a couple of times a month.

Sorry, I thought I'd typed that in once. :p

Yeah, I'm aware that for the Polo I'm looking at it's going to be around the £2k mark.

I was expecting those prices before I checked.

VW's seem to have a bit of a 'scene tax' in terms of buying and insuring, apparently they are considered slightly more of a 'premium' brand compared to Ford etc for some reason.

Nice cars but when you are on a sight budget it is usually better off going for something a little less popular, less to buy and can sometimes be less to insure because they are not seen as such a boy racers car etc...

Consider an old Mondeo, Fiesta, Punto etc.... You may find a 1.8 Mondeo is cheaper to insure than a 1.2 Polo.

i'm in the same position as you and i got a quote for Mitsubishi colt 1.2 £1300 a year fully comp. can't remember how old the car was but i saw it on autotrader. and decided to see how much insurance would be.

I just got a quote of £2.5k third party fire and theft for a 1.3 Colt
