I'm very tempted to have a look as the only real downside is the insurance and petrol as I see it? I see it as also being a lot more interesting and enjoyable than a Focus / Golf / Mondeo.

Done quite a bit of reading and there seems to be only very minor reliability issues associated with the model?

Any advice would be welcome

Why is it being compared to a Golf and a Focus? It's a completely different car in every possible way.

He's probably shopping for a Golf/Focus/Mondeo and thought 'oh look I can buy a Mercedes for the same money'.

Does the fact it's an expensive luxury car that has been, in the owners own words, "slammed" not put you off in the slightest?

Would you be looking to buy it for the lower price, or the higher price with the wheels that don't suck the big one?

Pretty much!

I need a car to get me 2.5 hours down the motorway most weekends and although I know a Mondeo would be the sensible choice, I can't help but want something a little different. Got around £1700-ish to spend.

They seem to get rave reviews for cruising ability with a very highly rated engine and great reliability (all from which I have read, please tell me if otherwise though) so I don't see where it's going to cost the earth to run, that may just be me being naive however.

I like the look (not the "slammed" part, and with the nice wheels), decent service history, very clean inside and at a bargain price?

Suggestion always welcome as well as I was initially looking at smaller cars as the 2.5 hour drive didn't make me think I needed a bigger, more motorway friendly car (still don't but I can see the benefits even for the relatively limited use).

I own one of these at the min, it is a car that I took in part ex against a Jag I sold.

Car is superbly solid and very smooth! It is a little dull to drive as it's very predictable and also the 280 engine is powerful and sounds good too.

Nothing wrong with one of those Mercs, last of the built to spec not budget mercs. Absolutely solid.

Just dont buy a slammed rusty one with daft wheels. :)

With 1700 quid to spend I dont think you are in a position to have something different - if its different and 1700 quid it'll be different because its either ancient or crap.

Buy the Mondeo and save the desire for something different until you can afford it.

I actually quite like that, I think it looks nice on the larger wheels he has it picured on, not so much the smaller 8 hole originals.

What I don't like though is the fact it's lowered, the rust on the front arches or the lack of leather seats.
