Been offered one of these cards but I have not been up to date with GFX tech these days. I would like to know how good this card is - I have twin Radeon 4870s just now - where is it in comparison to these as far as performance goes?

Anyone got a link to a comparison chart?

2x4870's will be significantly faster than a single 285gtx, the only upgrade for you is really a 5970, 2x5850 or something along those lines.

Two old gen gpu's generally won't be far off the performance of a single new gen gpu as they tend to roughly double in power.

2x4870's probably match a 5850(though it has a heck of overclocking headroom) and is probably beaten by a single 5870 but not by an amount that would really be an "upgrade" to what you have.

You'd pretty much need to go for a xfire setup of any kind to see a big upgrade in performance and a 285gtx would be a noticeable decrease in performance.

I am not looking to upgrade my main rig - this is for another computer and I am trying to gauge how well this performs thats all guys.

In that way, I will decide whether it is worth getting - is it as good as a single 4870 ?

Its better than a single 4870. Around 10-20% I would think as the 4870 is equivalent to a gtx260 and the 285 is its bigger brother.

Its a GTS - is that as good?

AFAIK, the only GTS card in that family is the G92b based GTS 250.

The only card with the 285 numbering is the GTX 285. This is a good card and a good chunk faster than a 4870 - but isn't nearly as fast as two 4870s in crossfire.

This and this review compares a GTX 285, single 4870 and 2 4870s in crossfire (or 4870X2 which has practically the same performance).

yep, if its a 285 it will be a gtx which is a fair bit quicker than a gtx 280 and that is no slouch. The GTS cards were cheaper cards and less powerfull, theres wasn't ever a GTS 285 though.

How did you work that out ??

I thought the 285 was just a more energy efficient version of the 280 with maybe a few more smaller changes, speedwise they were much the same.

I went from a 4870 to a 4870x2 to a GTX 280 and between the latter I couldnt tell much difference apart from the 4870x2 could turn bread into toast.

If you look at the benchmarks I linked to in my last post you will see that the GTX 285 is fair bit quicker than the GTX 280. Its not a massive jump, but there certainly is a performance increase along with the die shrink.

How did you work that out ??

the 280 uses a 65nm die and the 285 a 55nm so yes less voltage and less power usage but that = faster clock/shader/memory speeds and generally a 10% boost in performance over the 280.
Twin 4870s are still going to out perform the 285 so I would probably give the 285 a miss unless you want less heat and less noise.
