I think it's that very volcano you've mentioned there. I'm not sure, we're not particularly close to any fault zones.

As you can see here, that volcano rests on a fault line, which is how its existence came to be.

Edinburgh castle :) It's built on an extinct volcanic plug. But for an actual dormant/active volcano maybe Tenerife or Southern Italy.

There's a potentially active one in Germany called Laacher See.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laacher_See
The Laacher See is a potentially active volcano, proven by seismic activities and heavy thermal anomalies under the lake. Carbon dioxide gas from magma still bubbles up at the southeastern shore,[9] and scientists believe that a new eruption could happen at any time, which, today, would be a disaster beyond all description, especially considering that Germany is a heavily populated country and this caldera lies just 8 km from the Rhine at Aldernach.

The closest active Volcano to the UK is Katla in Iceland which is 563 miles from Isle of Lewis, Vesuvius is 996 miles from the Channel Islands, so Katla would be the nearest Active volcano.

Extinct volcanoes are situated somewhat closer however. Edinburgh, Mull, Skye and Rum in Scotland are all on sites of extinct or dormant Volcanoes. They have been inactive for 60-400million years.

Snowdon and the Lake District are both situated on 'Super Volcanoes' but again they have been extinct for around 450million years.
