Guess it depends how new it was. We had a friend who parked his brand new BMW 7 series in the Gatwick long stay. This was maybe 10 years ago. The aircraft frequencies just happened to perfectly match those of the key that opened the windows and the sunroof. He came back and his car was completely flooded - pretty watertight those seals. BMW gave him a whole new interior.

Suppose the BMW here will have mechanical damage too. Not sure - you're probably right. Probably a write-off.

Water damage and saltwater damage are two completely different things. The BMW will most definately be written off.
