Hi all.

Right, I currently drive a Nissan Skyline R32 GTR, it is a 2.6l twin turbo running 515bhp. I use it as a daily driver and manage to do about £30 a week in petrol (just under half a tank staying off boost at all times) driving to and from work which is a 7.4 mile round trip.

I have been given a 1994 Ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol and was wondering is it worth me getting insured on it and using it as the daily and keeping the GTR for fun or is the petrol going to last me about the same and not worth it at all?

I have had a look around for average MPG on one of these but i cant really find anything, the GTR is my second skyline and my 3rd car my first was a 1.6 astra estate and i cant remember how much petrol that used!

Thanks for any advice.

No way will that be worth insuring, taxing, mot'ing etc financially. Without even looking at any numbers i can say that.

It'd make little sense in terms of saving petrol but if you wanted to save cold running wear and tear on the Skyline then it would be a good idea.

Is this a sneaky thread to boast about your skyline :)

30 a week in your skyline, even if the Mondeo does twice the MPG it will still cost £15 a week. Assuming on the cheaper side to insure your going to be looking at say £5 a week and then road tax at say £3 a week + MOT ontop of that (rough off the top of my head).

So basically you may save a couple of pound a week, if thats worth it to you then i'd suggest selling the skyline!!

Something's wrong there as assuming 120ppl and a five day working week, and that commuting was all you ever did in it, that would give your Nissan an mpg of 6.73. I'm assuming the £30 isn't taken from a week when all you did was commute then?

Anyway I put this together which proves what people have said - that it's not worth it by a mile. This even disregards maintenance and the hassle of it.
As you can see it assumes the Nissan achieves 20mpg, which may be optimistic...? Assuming 35 mpg from the Ford, just over 13mpg from the Nissan would see you break even.

If you could save 15 quid a week though...and used the hack for purely "work" purposes...

45 weeks work * 15quid a week = £675 per year.

IF you could add it to your insurance for little, pay tax, and never need to maintina the mondeo it could save you money...but I would only suggest it if you wanted to save the skyline for non work purposes.

Ever watch top gear with the BMW? Where Clarkson proved that if you drive a high powered car sensibly, you could get more MPG than a slow car, due to not having to give it full revs everywhere ust to get it to go at a reasonable speed

He didn't prove anything, the Prius was being driven as fast as it could possibly be driven, you don't need to go everywhere at that speed.

Yeah that is a good point and one i have been thinking about for a while.

I wish it was mate, another reason for this is that i cant get on my GF's drive with this one as the skyline is so low and her drive is dodgy so she is moaning about me not staying at hers during the week :(. I would raise it if the coilover locking collars hadnt seized!

I use V-Power in the Skyline which is 125ppl at the moment. And yes that is just driving to and from work like a granny. Wouldnt be suprised if the mpg was around that area though.

Thanks a lot for doing that adding up for me though Robbie really appreciate it! I am 23 so insurance even with the old dear on is £500

I would take into account more than just petrol. Wear and tear + servicing on the Nissan is going to be seriously more. Plus the accidental damage and leaving it in car parks can sometimes take the worry weight off your mind.

If it is purely fuel forget it.

I'd seriously reconsider your choice of car if £30 a week is causing you financial problems - maybe a 500bhp skyline isnt the right car choice?

Sure, if you want to save wear and tear on your toy then fine - but then surely you dont need to justify it in mpg terms?

The cost of fuel isnt a problem really the main reason for it is because the misses is moaning because i cant stay at hers in the week.

The only cost issues im worrying about is running two cars and whether i will be saving money running the mondeo as a daily driver, if not she will just have to put up with seeing me at the weekend! I also really dont want to raise the car as it wont look as good so using the mondeo is another reason to get away from that :)

Im quite happy to use the Skyline everyday.

Why cant you stay at hers at the weekend - I dont follow?

You're unlikely to save money, not by the time you tax, insure and maintain it.

She stays at mine on the weekend but she moans because i used to stay at hers during the week and now i have the new skyline i cant get on her drive as its a like a v when trying to get on it, im just trying to make my life easier.
