Hi

Im currentley with Barclays and ive had enough .... without going on they have ****** me off for the last time this week and ive decided i want to change banks as im sure theres better out there. I dont really know a lot about this hence why im asking here so your advice is appreciated. Some banks offer £100 to change over, is it worth doing this or is it just a con ?

Feel free to ask any questions

Cheers

Sam

The bank is hardly going to con you. If you meet the criteria you get the reward (eventually).

To get those sort of offers you will usually have to have a certain amount in the account you transfer and move over all your standing orders.

I'm with Nationwide, they seem decent enough, mainly took an account out with them so I could have an account for free foreign money exchanges but ended up switching everything to them.

edit/ technically not a bank :p

Don't go with Natwest. I've just had a nightmare with them due to me purchasing a car and moving house at the same time. Obviously with a finance deal I needed proof of address.

I went into the branch to change my address. I was told that this would take a week. I called Natwest after 5 days and it hadn't changed. The guy I spoke to on the phone said that this was something he could change immediately though... So that was 5 days wasted.

I then had to request a statement showing my address on it as I didn't have any. This cost me £5 and I was told would take 5-6 working days. OK I thought, not ideal but at least then things will move along. On the 5th day, no statement received. I called them asking why and they said that I should wait until the 6th. I did, no statement. Called them again and they said "Oh, the statement takes 10 working days to come". At this point I lost my temper with them as 10 working days would have taken me to the end of the month anyway when I would have received a statement for free, so I wouldn't have agreed to it in the first place. I got my £5 which was at least something.

On the 8th day I had a statement come through the post. It didn't have an address on. So I've been sat around waiting for Natwest to send me a piece of paper with my proof of address on and STILL haven't had it. Meanwhile BMW have been able to service the car, clean the car, and prepare it for me to pick it up.

My parents also had major problems with Natwest and have since changed to HSBC and had no problems. I have also now changed to HSBC and can't wait to close my Natwest account.

Obviously some people will say that Natwest have done them no wrong. I was one of these people but then realised the only reason I'd never had a problem with them was because I'd never needed them to do anything for me before.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I didnt really meen it like that ;) just wondered if it was worth doing ... alliance & leicester offer £100 if you move your standing orders and can put more than £500 into the account each month which seems easy considering i want it to be my main bank account

Natwest tale of horrors

This is why banks are very subjective things - I've been with Natwest for the past 12 years, done most of the stuff you have mentioned and I've never had the slightest problem with them. Courteous, effective and extremely well organised.

Santander (or Abbey as was) on the other hand? Retards trained by chimps. Wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire

Never Santander.

Not just me, but plenty of my friends have had problems with them. Completely incompetant and their foreign CS really are worse than a bunch of blind retarded monkeys!

Edit: Just read Goliaths post and it's good to see someone using the exact same terminology :D

First direct always win awards for customer service, either them or HSBC, make sure you go Plus though if you do.

Plus is good as you get free (well for £12-95 per month :o) breakdown cover, travel insurance and UK call centers.

Also I work there so I am biased. :D

never HSBC worst branches and service ever, most of their branches now are just like a casino with loads of machines everywhere, I left for natwest and its been great! plus I speak to england when I call and not new delhi

Cant say Im a massive fan of Halifax, but then all banks seem to mess people around.

They do give me £5 a month though, so cant complain at that!
