My dad currently owns a 56 plate 2.2 TDCI Mondeo Titanium X. It is currently making some stranges noises when cold.

Below is a sound file just after starting the car. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance.

Noisy idle with an underlying barbling sound that starts / stops and is particularly noticeable after blipping the throttle.

Just wondering how many miles the Mondeo has done?

Could be a dirty EGR valve or MAF sensor, both are fairly easy to strip and clean if you are fairly mechanically minded.

The only other common faults on the MK3 diesel engines are failing injectors, but I don't think it sounds like its one of those.

May well be the DMF but without hearing it I cant really say

It could very well be the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel), but its that more of a rattly sound rather than a deep vibrating sound? However, having never heard a faulty one myself I could'nt really comment any further.

They can do all sorts - mine just make a veyr high pitched squeal when the clutch was disengaged as the swarf got into the release bearing.

However, the mp4 file is 0 byes and the first video aint working either, so I cant comment at all!

DMF has gone

It'll take a long time for the failure to actually stop the car working, but you dont want it to get that far! It'll start jamming up the starter motor which can make the repair more expensive, so get it sorted when you can.

In terms of cost, you'll see some silly 4 figure amounts quoted, but I paid £650 for mine to be done (That was replacement of flywheel and clutch) at a large chain. You might need to phone around some gearbox/clutch specialists and do some halgging, but the general concensus is that 600~700 is a good price. Mine was a 2.0 but I'm fairly sure it's the same.
