Would really appreciated a bit of help from someone, I bought some pc parts in november and my pc has been crashing usually when playing games and watching video's in media player, but I will get into that in another thread if need be, firstly I would like to know, what is the temp of the intel i7 920 processor is at idle, half load and full load with standard supplied fan. Not even overclocked,

what temp is the max for this processor, I read it's around 100 celcius

Mine idles at around 38-43 celcius at idle, but I ran OCCT earlier and after 1 - 2 minutes it stopped the test as the processor was reaching around 76 and the program indicated this was too high.

Don't want to end up damaging my cpu

Umm those are my Temps while overclocked to 4Ghz i would suggest a new cooler esp if this is not overclocked ofc they seem alittle high for stock. P.S 85C is fine 75 sweet spot.

I think you read the post wrong

cpu is around 70 - 80

max temp of the cpu is 100


no dust anywhere, case is pretty dust free


but something is making the cpu heat up too much, I have 2 120mm fans on the case, motherboard is at a constant 41 celcius once the pc has been on for around 10 mins and doesn't change

Re seat your heat sink with some decent thermal compound.
 
I'm surprised that the machine is shutting down @ 76C. I thought that the limit was 100C. My chip @3.8 idles at ~42C and maxes around 78C under the Noctua UH12 with no hint of instability.
 
I want to get a corsair h50, as I want to overclock to 4ghz sometime in the future, but funds don't allow this at the moment.
Also a new graphics card and a SSD

I don't know if the cpu getting hot is the cause of the pc crashing, it's just something I noticed the other day, and thought it may contribute towards it.


I think I may start a new post, see if any one can help

That ain't right yo'. You're going to fry your CPU if you haven't already done significant damage. Are you sure the fan on the heatsink is plugged in? Get yourself a nice Zalman cooler and fast.

If it was as simple as that I wouldn't be asking on here.


It wouldn't be the first time the fan from the psu is blowing hot air onto the cpu, had this on one of my previous pc's

Significant damage? LMAO thats not going to happen in the 70s or even 80s plus the chip is going to shut itself down a long time before that.

Reseat your heatsink mate it might just be that.

Took the heatsink off, scraped off the old paste, put some arctic silver 5 on there.

It's showing a few degrees cooler whilst playing games, and occt takes a while longer before stopping due to the processor being hot.
It worked a little bit, but not enough

will definatly buy a new heatsink, and once it's running cooler will see what happens from there

The PSU should not be blowing hot air onto the CPU. ATX PSUs suck air from inside the case and exhaust it out the back.

I recently had to use the stock i7 heatsink on my i7 after I dismantled my watercooling. With the CPU at stock speeds, it got to around 65c under full load. Either your cooler is not seated properly or you have no airflow.

No, if the CPU gets too hot it will automatically shut the PC off. I've had this happen before when I forgot to plug my water pump in.

Hello what? The chip will shut itself off before it reaches anywhere near irreversable damage. Tjunction max is 100C iirc and thats way before the level of heat that will cause permanant damage. Obviously running the chip in the 80s-90s 24/7 is not a good idea but even then i've seen such abuse with no effect at all. I deal with OEM systems on a daily basis and can guarantee you a lot of them are idling in the 60s over the last few weeks and prolly will come close to if not on Tjmax if pushed hard and these will run 24/7 for years to come.
