How did you pay for your car?

LOL justifying a 1996 Megane itt

I am justifying the original purchase, yes - nothing LOLworthy about buying a car which was pretty popular at the time - and the justification for not selling it is that it's still going.

I fail to see what's so funny about that.

It's not as if I am depriving myself of anything, it's only £200 a month - I put more than double that into my pension fund anyway. Does the "getting hit by a bus" rule apply to saving for retirement as well?

So with saving £200 over 15 years you haven't accounted for monetary inflation. If i could be bothered i'd work out what the real term amount is and would actually make a big difference. So in effect you have to save more for a long period to own a new car.

I'm with Fox.

You don't dump 24k on a brand new Megane because you want an A-B vehicle. If you wanted an A-B vehicle for a 10-15 year period you would buy a Kia with one of those ridiculous warrantys. Or you spend half that amount on rot-boxes over 10 years because the car and how it drives does not matter to you, being an A-B, right?

Cash for me, always.

Finance just doesn't seem right for me as i don't like having worries but if others do then good for them as its none of my business ;)

Saving up for 14 years so you can spend £24,000 on a car is at odds with the concept that cars are 'not important' to you.

That's really strange then, because that's just what has happened.

It's not, no. Whats happened is that actually, cars are rather more important to you than you care to admit :)

If they were that important to me, according to everyone who commented, I wouldn't be currently driving around in a '96 Megane.

I can't work this place out sometimes!

:)

I paid cash for mine but ex-wife got it in the divorce settlement. So now I have a car which she purchased on Finance which I signed for. Interest rate is pretty good on it and tbh, it is a very economical, reliable car.

Got about 3.5k left on it and it's on an 07 plate so i could probably change if I wanted too. But with my problems at present buying cars are at the bottom of my agenda.

No, you drove a 96 Megane because you were silly and cant comprehend the idea of not purchasing something without first saving for it.

I've already stated that I got that car on 0% finance, I bought it from new in 1996 and I'm still driving it.

All I do is tend to put around £600 a month into a 4yr bank loan

after 3 years I have equity in the car, I sell the car, pay off the loan, use the spare for the deposit on next car and start again
