So, back the other week when Eyjafjallajökull was making a right mess of air traffic in Europe this lovely website was posted somewhere in the volcano thread:

http://www.flightradar24.com/

Sometimes I'll see a plane up over me and I can now nip onto there if I'm curious and see where its going, which is rather nice, like the ShipAIS website.

Anyway, I was wondering what it means if you see planes flying overhead that don't show up on that website? I'm not the best sleeper in the world, so I tend to be up at 3, 4, 5am and there seems to be this one damn plane that does a long wide 180 degree turn over my house every couple of days at like 3:30am, yet its never on that website when I go to have a look.

Why would this be? Just curious. :)

What you are seeing on that website is not a radar feed. As above, it is based on a network of ADS-B receivers. Not all aircraft aree equipped with these transponders and not all of those that are have the function enabled.

There's a LOT more up there than appears on that website.

a lot of aircraft that you see don't have the right equipment to be able to appear on that website.

Also for obvious reasons our military aircraft don't appear
:)

Good post :)
