So the HTC Desire seems to be the posterboy phone right now, any decent rivals due?

Looking around this forum, the HTC Desire seems to be pretty much the best phone in its price bracket on the market right now, with a price region Im interested in *upto £30 p/m contract*, reviews are very good, and upcoming software updates look promising.

I'm due an upgrade as of about a months time (and complete contract expiry in a couple more), so I'm considering a move to the Desire as my next step, especially if I can persuade them to upgrade me for free, but not following phones that heavily, I'm unsure if there's anything just round the corner that is looking like it could be better.

I know there are rumours of a 4G Iphone around the corner, but Im generally not that fond of Apple products/limitations or ITunes, so that almost completely rules the Iphone out for me.

Is there anything else I should be keeping an eye on :)

PS. Only downside I can really see with the Desire is reports on battery life are mixed, with some reporting a few days without charge, others not more than a day.

Nexus One is virtually the same phone, see which you can get cheapest (Nexus is only on Vodafone though :( )

Other than that and the iPhone, no not really, not that we know of. There may be others we don't know, but they will equal the Desires spec's not better it

Battery life on the Snapdragon phones depends totally on how much you use it. With a bit of wi-fi, texting and calling my Nexus lasts a day (16-24 hours). With virtually no use, about two days. It's not great but I've not been caught out yet.

As for rivals, there are a few others of note, although still Android and still Snapdragon e.g. Droid Incredible and HTC Evo, but iirc these are both CDMA so useless in Europe. There is also a very snazzy Dell Android phone out towards the end of the year, but it still uses a 1ghz Snapdragon... so I think Android's starting to plateau a bit really (which is good, cos that means it's finally as good as/better than the iPhone.)

Also bear in mind the Nokia N900, which is getting good reviews and runs Nokia's own Linux distro, Maemo.

iPhone 4G will be interesting to see, but Apple are gonna have to do some good stuff to get the crown back.

I really like the Droid Incredible but sadly i cant get one, anyone have any idea when its coming out if it every does here?

Its essentially the 3rd iteration of the Nexus/Desire platform, much like the the Droid Eris is directly related to the Hero but has been given a revamp in making the switch to CDMA,

Apparently the Incredible has a better touch screen layer (Different hardware) than the Nexus or Desire, and has internal storage, but other than that they seem fairly similar.

I suspect we won't get it as its not worth re-engineering when the UK market already has 2 phones built from that platform

It wont come out here ever unless HTC decide to make a GSM model which is very very unlikely...no ifs ands or buts about it....reason why it wont work here is because it runs on a CDMA network which doesnt use a sim card...and in N America Sprint and Verizon are the main players for CDMA tech...Verizon is getting the Incredible but other than a few different features ie 8mp camera and 8gb internal storage...its not that much different from the Desire or Nexus 1.

TBH the Desire is a very nice looking phone...i dont see the colour being an issue in all honesty and most people have said the same.

Guess im just different, it does look nice I just really like the black better imho.

From the looks of it at the moment other than the new iPhone that is likely to be launched in July we will have to wait until the winter before any new phones are released. Then it will probably be a batch of Windows Phone 7 phones, alongside a possible HD3.

Thanks guys, looks like the only real downside (beyond possible price) is the battery life then :)

*Hopes for a revamped battery model!*
(And yes I know thats somewhat ironic given my choice in 'laptops')

As long as it fits in my pocket, and the battery works without costing a mint Im not THAT bothered, I've used some pretty bricky phones in the past :D
Are there any official resellers/reviewed, extended batteries for the phone?

You mean September?

Sony Ericsson has not set a date, just H2 2010 for the 2.2 update. SE where the first company to mention the existence of Android 2.2 (Froyo)The update due within the next few weeks addresses the problems with battery life, low speaker volume and a few other system tweaks.

The September date has come from a Engadget, which can be hardly trusted tbh.
