ATI 6***series 2010 or 2011 confused

woah ati are like a metronome atm,
are we expecting twice as many stream processors as the 5870 then for the 6870?

The 6000 series apparantly will be a hybrid of the 5000 series and the originally planned northern islands. Who knows what it has to offer!

I am still expecting a refresh of the 5000 series before we see the 6000s. Where is the 5890?

Languishing in the design folder called "What to release if Fermi is anygood".

If they released a 5890 now that was quicker than fermi, £100 cheaper and with better power management, all of which is easily possible, wouldnt it be better for ATIs market share?

If they made a 5890 that was quicker than the 480GTX it would be very unlikely to be cheaper than it. There's no reason for ATI to make a small speed bump at the moment, they've got the fastest card and they're not really losing sales to Fermi as Nvidia can't make them in any sort of quantity (and don't want to due to the poor economics).

Southern Islands is also really just a testing ground for the technology to be used in Northern Islands on 28nm.

I thought the ati 6xxx series was meant to be a totally new architecture?

It was, Northern Islands as mentioned above, however due to TSMCs shoddy work recently, they're now saving the complete architectural change til they can shift it over to GF's 28nm process.

The 6 series, unless they decide to introduce NI to it later on, is now formed of cards dubbed Southern Islands, which is a hybrid design featuring sections of the evergreen (5 series core), with some updated parts from the Northern Island design.
