Hi,

I have noticed you can now pick up the 5830's for around £160 (not of here of course, yet!). Just wondering if it's worth getting one over the 5850's for gaming a 1600 x 900?

The 5850's are £220+ and the ASUS version always says pre-order, for like 2 months now!

Are the 5830's worth the £160 tag for what you get out of them? and how long they will last playing new releases on top notch settings?

At the res in honesty a 5770 would be the best choice cn find this for £115 plenty left for beer and hook...er nvm. :D
If you really set on the above pay the extra 5850 and o/c the nuts off it

To be honest, that's the kind of price the 5830 should have been sold at in the first place, rather than 5850-£10 money.

It fits in nicely now, and you could actually, nearly, maybe, recommend it.

As said though, either the 5770 or 5830 would be absolutely fine for 1600x900 (I run a 5850 at that res, and it's over the top...)

5850 overclocks to 5870 so keeps you future proof for a few years

but it is still not a 5870 and it does not have the same number of core's the 5870 has , plus the fact the 5870 clocks well also . back on topic the 5830 will be better than the 5770 if the price is good enough , not seen them for £160

Yeah 5830 can be picked up for around 155ish and a well known store is doing the AVP edition for 165. The 5770's can also be picked up pretty cheap at around 105 -110.

At 150ish the 5830 is starting to look a hell of a lot better deal especially compared to the orignal rrp.

At that price point the 5830 does look like a decent investment, especially with a 20" monitor. It will last you a good enough while.

But to be perfectly honest, judging by the benchies the 5830 overall has been a bit of a disappointment when considering it's gains over the 5770 and below the 5850. Its an odd ball in the gen, seems like it could have worked if the pricing was tighter. However, the real problem are the other overpriced cards, 5850 and beyond.

Not that we can blame them, with Green as they are this round

I think if the 5830 was this price at launch, I would have bought one. However, this late in the game I think I will just wait and see what's available for less than £200 in a couple of months.

Just picked up a Powercolor HD 5830 OC for under £160, so think @ that price it was a worthwhile purchase, anybody else have one of these and if so what do you think?

5-10% performance difference, depending on how good your chip and cooling are. Applies to both 5850 and 5870.

To the OP - 5770 will be just fine, 5830 may be a good value @160 and 5850 is a killer. It's all up to you and your budget really.

Cheers for the above replies.

I was however rather lucky today and managed to pick up a 5850 of the bay for £180 with delivery included. The sapphire version and the seller has only had it a month and is sending the warranty with it too.

Bring on some decent high def gaming now :)
