The Old Republic: Combat Video

well tat was an aweful lot of nothing, any MMO on the market could make a trailer look just like that and a fair few e.g. darkfall could make it look better, my money is on traditional turn based combat, nothing more.

Thing is that "Turn Based" combat hides high latency very well.

Having fully dynamic, twitch-based combat ala Jedi Acadamy would mean that those with great pings would be in a far better situation (especially in PvP) than those with 150+.

It would also make ranged combat difficult, wouldn't it? It'd be shunned in favour or melee, again due to latency, as hitting a lagging target could be difficult, but less difficult to get in close and just swish a lightsaber about.

Which is why I'm guessing the turn-based/dice roll aproach is adopted in most MMO's.

My first thought too. Looks terrible. Just another MMO with Star Wars themes.

Dude you seem totally jaded on the whole mmo scene, especially after how keen you where before.

Personally cant wait for this, Bioware are my fave dev (well maybe second to Bethesda).

The senior game designer at about 2.40 mins, how old is he. looks like 12. lol

And look at his name:

They shall never take...our freeroam!

Game looks ok. Will give it a go when it comes.

Yeah, I used to like MMOs - but recently we are just seeing exactly the same formula repeated with different themes and they expect £15 a month for it! I was quite looking forward to this, but the combat video just doesnt look good. The lightsaber combat looks exactly the same as in KOTOR - which is crazy given how long ago those were.

Probably becuse MMOs are no different to each other anymore. They all have the same mechanics/gameplay and pretty much consist of the same ****...

Also, just one big PvE fest.

Really have lost my faith in MMOs.

I'm not sure if I like the "does it all for you" automatic attacks, thats how it looks in the video anyway. Could get repetetive.

I really don't see how you came to that conclusion given the readily available information of the combat system out there.
Plus, most MMOs showing auto attack will look like crap anyway :p

I don't understand how people can reasonably expect anything more from a keyboard based control for an MMO.
Everyone's good at criticising but never say what they could do to improve it, not like a hundred mmos out there haven't already tried and tested it in the real world, coming to the simple and basic design the "click attacks" is the only way to go.

The devs have said that there is NO auto attack option in the game. All attacks rely on a key press.

looks decent but im still waiting for more detailed info on what the game offers after you completed the story+leveling

watching the new combat video it seemed very samey to others i've seen videos of, in particular wow seems very boring point and click, however after watching the e3 demo i now beleive they've added the extra 'bit' needed to make the combat much more enjoyable. watching the smuggler video seems great the though of having to duck/hide/shoot/move/duck etc, much more interesting then i thought. that's what i expected more of which initially i iddn't realise they had done

Having been initially excited about this game I now get the feeling its going to be boring as hell. The 'solo' aspect that the devs talked about a while back worries me, in that it sounds like typical BioWare cutscenes aplenty and could stand as a single player game. And is it just me or do the animations look really clunky? The character models and enviroment look a bit bland as well.

To pay a monthly fee you need to do a lot better than have what so far looks a SP game with some cookie cutter MMO elements thrown in. I Could be wrong but I have a bad feeling about this.... Maybe it was meant to be KotoR 3 but someone convinced them to convert it to an MMO. The amount of crazy money they are throwing at this they better hope they get at least 1-2 milllion + regular subs or it could turn into a disaster.

i honestly think that they'll have no problem getting a lot of subscribers. the idea of mmo's is a really great one, with bits and bobs about them that are off putting, e.g. i hear there is a lot of grinding. i'm sure this one will have so much time put into making it the next best mmo and it's backed up by a really great universe that a lot of people already know. i don't play wow because i can't relate to the story, it all seems very gamey, however i did play lotro with my brother and it was a heck of a lot of fun. i knew the characters, the idea of the world etc before starting, and i think star wars will be a hundred times better simple because of this reason.

the graphics look ever so slightly on the side of being too kiddishy, but i understand that simpler graphics means more time can be put into what's really important
