I've got a V351 (check sig-link), with a 5850 in there. It's a touch noisy, and runs pretty warm (76°C max measured so far while gaming, though under Furmark we're hitting mid 80s).

Are there any air-cooling aftermarket heatsinks out there that fit the following criteria:
-No more than dual-slot, as there is a sound card in front that cannot be moved (otherwise I'd just get the Zalman)
-Better cooling performance than the stock heatsink
-Quieter than the stock heatsink, or because it cools better, the fans won't have to be turned up so high

What's out there that's good? GPU coolers appear few and far between...

Cheers
Simon

boht of them take 2 slots making 3 slots altogether the other ooption is to get a card with a new cooler already like the his or vaporx dnt think there is any aftermarket coolers with only take up a single slot otherwise sorry to say

Ah. I thought that might be the case.

I'll have to do some digging around to see if I can get one of the PCS coolers that PowerColor use, or one of the VaporX ones. I don't really want to change the card to be honest.

Can recommend the Sapphire 5850 Toxic, very quick card and super cool. Currently idling at 29c on 25% fan(cant hear fan)and goes to 55c at 45% fan when running Heaven 2.0 benchmark and 60c when playing Metro 2033.:)
Plan to Crossfire in the summer.

A Zalman VF950 or VF1000 May be ok. They are 30 mm high going by their spec. There's also the Thermaltake DuOrb VGA also 30mm, and Scythe Musashi GPU coolers but is slightly taller at 35mm.

Otherwise a cooler such as the Thermalright HR-01 that you can fit the wrong way around so that the fan is over the rear of the card.

Mmm, I had a look at the Thermalright coolers. If I had another 5mm of vertical clearance they'd probably be ok, but it's so tight in the V351 that I doubt that it would fit.

Zalman don't list the VF950 or VF1000 as being 5xxx series compatible, and I don't know whether the 48xx and 58xx series use the same mounting holes - if they do then the VF1000 would be a good bet - it's basically the same cooler as used on my old Powercolor 4890 PCS+.

The Thermaltake doesn't look like it would be able to cope very well with a 5850 to be honest, and again, they don't list as being 58xx compatible.

I did have a look at the Scythe Musashi - which looks good, but there appear to be conflicting opinions on whether it's a dual-slot cooler (like the stock one) or a tri-slot cooler. I'll have to do some measurements.

Thanks for the input so far.

The XFX v2 5850s' are excellent.

Got 2 in xfire, very quite at full load - and the hottest one hasn't gone over 80 in benching.

( The v2 is the model with the centre fan )

4870 and 5850 use the same mounting holes because i am still using my 4.5yr old GPU block on my 5850. Just because they don't list the 5800 series as compatiable does'nt mean that they won't fit. It's more likely that they just have'nt updated their list.

I'd seen that one - but it just looks a bit tall for the case unfortunately.

This is the problem I'm having - there are plenty of GPU coolers out there. Then, they are narrowed down so they are dual slot max, and then again so they aren't too tall, and very few (if any really) remain...
