Yea, think I'm going to stick with it. Been playing around with my mate's Desire just now and I think it's a tad nicer looking, but I prefer the X10 screen real estate. My girlfriend also ordered the Desire today and should get it next week. We can swop back and forth every month so I get to use the HTC and she the SE.

Well there's a support email in the comments saying battery life will effectively be doubled through updates. That kind of suggests a problem to begin with.
Having used the phone for a while, there is a problem with power usage in standby mode. Either as mentioned in the comments, the radio is being used inefficiently or there's another problem like the processor not downclocking. The latter could probably have been checked by now if it had been rooted.
Turning 3G off helps a little, but use a task killer for all other large applications.
My Desire used to last a day easily, I could browse various websites frequently and still have 20% or so battery the next day, however this is kinda pointless since I would charge nightly and not bother worrying about it running low on battery...

Taling from experience with SE smartphones specially those built for them by HTC.
(A) Make sure you charge it from the mains charger not via USB hooked upto a PC - HTC/SE phones seem to not charge properly from any source other than the mains adapter.
(B) At regular intervals (say once every 2 months) let it run the battery down properly to say 5% before recharging (not a good idea to completely deplete it) - I know the battery isn't "supposed" to work like that but trust me it helps.
(C) Make sure wifi is actually off when not using it - the auto disconnect when idle does help but actually turning it off completely seems to improve battery life somewhat - not sure why theres a difference maybe the wifi circuitry still uses some power when idle but not when disabled entirely, turning off 3G as well can help.
At the end of the day you do have the processing power and hardware of a small computer in there - my smartphone's CPU is almost as fast as my old Pentium 3 and the hardware 3D acceleration could give the original Voodoo 1 a good run for its money. So having to recharge every 2-4 days isn't unexpected but with enough tweaking you should manage the best part of a week between recharges.

Well, the X10 was given to my girlfriend's brother in change for working in our garden every Saturday for a month, and I'm now back on a simple SE w800. Lovely phone, just not for me.

I've had that exact thought for years about mobiles in general. But I suppose more phones are sold via a shop window than people reading reviews so a thinner phone looks better than longer battery life in that enviroment. I agree with you 100% though.

Lasts 3 days with loads of web browsing and such, love itI don't understand the point in a Smart Phone like the latest snapdragon beasts that are designed to be able to do everything and anything all at the same time. But in order to get a days use out of it you have to effectively cripple it and turn off all of the nice features. A mobile should be something you can rely on, not stress about finding the next power point and whether it will get through the day or not. I've been looking at getting a Desire or the X10 but the battery life puts me off. I read on another forum that some people are finding with the Desire, that when using the GPS in a car with it connected to the car charger for power, it can actually use more power than the car charger can give back effectively meaning it will still run out in time. I'm not sure how true this is so please do tell me it's BS if you know.
It's nice phones but waaaaay too feature rich for me. I have 2 PC's and a laptop for travel. Right now I'm not needing all the bangs and whistles it offers. As I said in another post, I went back to my W800, charged it two days ago and it's still sitting on 80% battery life. Love it!
I find my iphone 3GS to be ok really. If I use it just as a phone, it will last 3 days. If I do the usual web-browsing etc it will still last 2 days. Maybe I'm just lucky. In the olden days I used to hate a phone with less than about 4 days battery. The worst one for me was the nokia n73. All I did with it was text and call and the battery only lasted a day-and-a-bit. I loved my SE w810i because it would last upto a week.
Even though I hated the n73 because of the battery, I don't actually mind with new smartphones because you do so much with them. It seems justified. Obviously more would be better but you could say the same about most things in life.
