My tax ran out end of last month so I went on line to stick another 12 months onto it only to find out it has no MOT as of end of the month either! My **** up, should have kept on top of it so will book it in Tuesday first thing but have a 10p sized stone chip in the windscreen which is not stretching really at the moment, but I wanted to know what the view of this will be come MOT as I will get the screen done first if it's going to be an issue.

I feel such a rebel.

Depends where on the screen it is. If it is directly in your line of sight it will fail.

There are zones on your windscreen, have a look online.

A chip in a windscreen may cause damage to the rubber of the vehicle’s windscreen wiper blades if left unrepaired.

It may result in your car failing your MOT. There are clear rules about what must be repaired in different parts of your windscreen, particularly the part that is swept by your windscreen wipers.

Damage larger than 10mm will fail in the drivers line of vision. Marked Zone “A” above
Damage larger than 40mm will fail in the rest of the swept area Marked Zone “B” above.
Significant scratching that impairs the drivers vision
Remember

If a chip is in the drivers line of vision, it only has to be bigger than 10mm for your windscreen to fail its MOT.
The MOT testers manual says “any damage not contained within a circle of 10mm” so a cluster of minor damage could also fail

Could have been worse, you could always drive to something like a rolling road meet, halfway down the length of the country, THEN realise you've run out of tax.

:p

If it's only just on the edge of the zone, you could fit some smaller wiper blades for the MOT? ;)

On the basis of above you shouldn't need it replacing? If the chip is less than 40mm. As its in zone B

I would say it's bigger than 40mm, no worry, I need to get the screen done anyway so will sort that first, then get it MOT'd then get it taxed. I don't need to use it tomorrow and my house is 1/2 mile off the nearest road.

National Windscreens currently on my driveway fitting a new Windscreen. MOT booked for tomorrow, better bloody pass!
