Ello people,

Anyone got any experience/views of these two cars? whether owning one, test driving etc.

The missus is considering getting a new car and these two take her fancy, but we havent had time to check any out in person yet.

Cheers

Where's my popcorn? ;)

GF's Brother just bought a Ceed.

It has 4 wheels and a steering wheel and stuff, and when he accelerates, the car moves and takes him where he wants to go.

Is "bus pass" an option? :p

No, but seriously the Hyundai i10 seems to get an alright write up. I think they're both much of muchness. They go, stop and turn. Kind of a "no frills" car.

Don't they have a stupid long warranty too?

Have the Koreans ever made a good car? :o

This one should give y'all a laugh. My Dad has a Kia Soul now (his Panda was about to expire).

1.6 diesel with a variable geometry turbocharger thingy. Officially the paint is called Cocktail Orange (he and I call it baby **** brown :D). And it's not a bad car. Engine produces more than enough power for it to stay out of its own way, it's very economical and there's enough space inside for a rugby team.

Yes, the interior plastics are nowhere near German enough for most people on here. Yes, the looks are....challenging. Yes, it's hardly got a refined exhaust note even by diesel standards. But it's comfortable, reasonably well equipped without being loaded down with frippery, not painfully slow and unlike the Fiat has a decent dealership right in the centre of town who don't try and screw you at every single opportunity.

I notice Top Gear magazine had one on 6 month test and mostly enjoyed it (though they managed to break the gearbox right at the end of their time with it!). Even Clarkson doesn't seem to mind it, and his views on Korean cars are generally unfavourable.

haha.... i was kinda expecting those responses if im honest, are they really that bad?

I noticed the i30 was what car of the year and seems to get favourable reviews but wanted a real life review if possible.

Maybe I should try to steer her in another direction then eh

Right, lets be honest here.

There's nothing wrong with them if you just want a car, and you don't care about driving enjoyment. They are the equivalent of automotive dishwashers.

She would be far better off spending her budget on a nearly new Fiesta or Focus instead - they're much better all round cars. In fact you could get a very good example for well under the price of a new Korean ecobox.

I can see these cars being quite good value in a few years time when they'll probably cost 8p and still have a few years of manufacturers warranty left on them.

Although I think the warranty after the first 2/3 years is much more limited...

They aren't bad as such, they are just best likened to a household appliance. If you plan on buying the car, keeping it until it breaks massively, then buying something else, and don't care about driver enjoyment etc then they are a good buy.

However, most people here want something more from their cars, and therefore find appliance type cars wanting.

Driven a Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi I believe it was. Perfectly good work horse, quite torquey, excellent economy, plenty of space because it was an estate.
