My missus will bring home any old stray ...

poor thing :(

its terrible what people do to animals. Still at least they wont put her down.

We rescued an abandonned cat only to be told by the RSPCA that cats are put down in 7 days unless they are collected :( :(

Yeah don't take them to an RSPCA centre. Take them to a re-homing centre they don't put them down.

That's a difficult one. It's not a hypothetical situation I'd like to be in and I'd imagine it wouldn't be easy for anyone who found themselves in that position.

Just hypothetically, what would you do?

Hard to say, but if it was really lost yesterday then It can't be that dog, I would be amazed if anyone would goto the effort of finding something that they took so little care off.

Would the hypothetical poster say it was lost yesterday or does it have a date on it? As it could be they have been printing the same poster for a month.

The following is a purely hypothetical situation.

A person stops off to buy 2 cans of coke nearby to where a stray dog may or may not have been found. There may be a poster in the window. The shop keeper may say it was brought in by a group of kids this afternoon.

It might be asking for information about a missing dog, "a straggly looking westie" which got out YESTERDAY....

Just hypothetically, what would you do?

Id think it was a coincidence ;) and u shouldnt pursue it any further.

Just to play out this imaginary tale, when the person buying the cola asked, the shopkeeper may have said that it was the first time the poster had gone up.

Hmm, that is a tough one! If the dog has only been missing 1 day then it's obvious the owner didn't really give a **** about the dog. A dogs coat doesn't get that matted or dirty in a day, and you also mentioned how hungry he/she was.

I would see if said dog responds to the name of the dog declared as missing on the hypothetical poster.

The cynic in me says she was kicked out into the garden due to her weeing problem (not exactly her fault she's developed an infection in this condition) and she's taken her chance and legged it. Theoretically of course.

I'd theoretically not let any hypothetical dog anywhere near the supposed people looking for a missing hypothetical dog.

Good on you for looking after the dog, many wouldn't have bothered. In response to the scenario above, I wouldn't let the dog anywhere near the original owner.

Just as a side note, using my electronic scales i measured that we have cut 70g of hair from her so far. (we bagged it in case we needed to show somebody.)

Been on to the RSPCA today, nobody has registered her as missing. Not surprised.

RSPCA aren't interested in her though, told us to ring the dog warden and get her taken to the pound. Fat chance!

She's got vets again tomorrow morning. Isn't just a water infection, there could be something wrong with her stomach too. :(

Best of luck, hope she makes a full recovery.

Yesterday we inherited a 10 week old Akita/Husky cross from the rescue charity we volenteer at.

Just got to get our 2 1/2 year old Akita and our cat used to the idea :p

Awww I hope you are able to keep her, you've done really well so far. Hope she doesn't have anything too serious.

I acquired my second dog as she was abandoned by gypsies at the industrial estate where my partner worked. They upped and left, as they do, and this little dog was left behind. I took her in, but a few days later they went to my partner's workplace and asked if anyone had seen her - to which 'no' was the reply ;) She was all matted and had string round her neck :(

Oh, and I worked for the RSPCA for many years and the policy was never to put a healthy animal down, although this meant that sometimes the animal home was full and we could not take more animals into our care. Sometimes it's a bit of a catch 22.

Bingo.

Theoretically speaking I might also decide to follow up for contact information purely as a speculative venture to say I might have, at some point, seen a similar dog in the area. Then provide said details to the RSPCA in case there are other mistreated animals involved.
