Fox - talk to me about BMW's

Paradigm is just crying because he has one therefore it must be the bestest. And if what I said is so full of lol why is he getting a petrol one instead?

Wow, you really are mature. I'm not "crying", neither do I think they are "the bestest", but they are certainly not any worse for road holding or driver feedback than a comparable 330i. I already explained their shortcomings, but you appear to have ignored that. And I'm going petrol because they don't do a diesel M3 and I no longer do 25,000 miles a year.

To be honest I don't see anything wrong with a 330d Sport. I dont think its the right car for the OP - but there are many people for whom a 330d Sport is a better car than a 330d SE.

Leaving the looks aside, because I do concede that the sport is better looking, who would benefit from the extra 4-5mpg AND the sport configuration?

Surely the d only makes sense for large mileage or someone who isn't fussed about driving dynamics and would therefore benefit from getting a less
abused se model?

We all know that the single biggest reason that x30d sales have skyrocketed is because of the way company car tax works now. The x30d sport models are therefore the best compromise of cost vs fun for a lot of users.

how they drive dont get that myself my mate was gonna chop his for a Cooper S turbo one and it was nowhere near as quick as his 330d
Speed and the way something drives are pretty different. I'm not disputing that the 330d is quick.

Well, if you start off with the attitude that you did, what do you expect? A civil and sensible reply?

But why do you make this assumption that anyone who does large mileage wont be interested in driving dynamics?
Because I think that if you do a large enough mileage to make the diesel work, then you're probably not going to want to put up with the sport for occasional fun blasts.

I've driven a 530i sport, 530d se, 330ci and I own manual x5 3.0d se.

The OP had a dc5 that revs to about 100,000 rpm, the last thing he needs in a BMW 'sport' model is a diesel engine. He's not jez, swanning up and down the motorway all week else he wouldn't have had a teg. If he's had a change of circumstances and is swanning up and down the country then why do it in a car with a diesel engine but hard suspension?

I also own one ;)
the reason I said he would be disappointed is because of the car he's comic from, not specifically because it's a diesel.
The assumption that a diesel driver has no need for the sport version is a silly one, the diesel sport is a great car.

Oh, and I am also looking at petrol ones, not because the diesel is poor but because I'm not doing anywhere near the milage compared to when I bought it :p

To be honest a Sport is hardly something you 'put up with'. Although I dont do big daily mileage in mine I do do a 400 mile round trip once a month. Which its brilliant at.

Fair enough that's your opinion, but IMO a 330d sport is a compromise that just doesn't make sense to me personally.

Compromise in what way? It's great for economy when using it as it should be and it's more than fine for some spirited driving when wanted.

It's not bad at it. But it isn't brilliant at it, as you well know. You feel every bump in the road and the SE setup doesn't eliminate that but it definitly makes it nicer.

Precisely, and even if you are doing the milage, motorways are typically smooth, so who cares that its a little stiffer?

It's 'a little better' in economy terms surely? A motorway run in a 330i will average what 32-34? And the 330d will do it at 36-38? But then for the spirited drive it literally runs out of puff at 4500rpm. it just isn't 'fun' IMO.

It runs out of "puff" when it runs out of puff, the only way you'd notice what RPM that was at is if you kept watch of the rev counter, when I'm driving spiritedly I watch the road. Given it has a top end of >140MPH, it matters not what the revlimit is at, it's how that is driven to the ground that matters. Given the vastly different final drive comparing the 330i to the 330d, the low RPM means almost precisely squat.

Oh, and FWIW, I averaged 45MPG to the French Alps in January.

Hey there's more of that LOL you were talking about earlier! What country do you live in?

The UK, and I have no qualms at all with the M6 other than the amount of traffic on it, it's by far and away smooth enough.

Compared to a dc5 or similar no, it's not fun. But then nobody here would dispute that.
No, you wouldn't stick it on a track in place of a petrol, but as a daily driver that would get used occasionally for some spirited driving, it's more than capable, which other than you, nobody would dispute ;)

Yes, I'm loving the random usage of commas!

What kind of mileage makes the 330d more worth while then a 330i? I currently do around 350 miles a week and am considering a 330d sport. I am however more interested in enjoyment then doing everything I can to increase fuel economy. Current Focus currently doing around 300 miles to a tank. What kind of price/age/mileage would be classed as a 'nice example' 330d?

For me, taking the "d" over the "i" made sense at about 20,000 miles.

You want a facelift, so 51 plate onwards, although if you can push for 53 plate or above you'll get the 204BHP engine rather than the 184BHP engine.

Should be able to get a nice 51/02 plater for £6500~ and a nice 53-04 plater for £9000~.
