Just snaged a 5850 on the MM, crossfire with uber clocking 5830?

Well I did have a second 5830 on the way from the shops but then a 5850 turned up on the members market for £180 and so I could not say no.

So I will return the 5830 I ordered since it will be unopened.

Now the 5850 is a reference design and I have a cooler I can put on it.

My 5830 is now happy to run at 1050mhz core all day and its using a reverse mounted HR-03GT which means adding a second card is not going to change its thermals.

Do I crossfire it with the 5850 or do I sell the 5830?

Have fun benching the 2 together but I'd just sell the 5830....if needed then save up a bit more for another 5850 in CF.

It would have to be a lot more or another second hand 5850.

Anyone interested in the fastest 5830 in the world? :p (note to mods this is not serious)

My point was that the 5830 is massively overpriced. The recent drop of 150ish at some locations has done it some good....if it were priced at 120-140 it would sell like hotcakes.

Considering that 5770s have gone up to £120 I think £150 is about as low as the 5830 will get.

Its certainly worth that though, over 17k in 3dmark vantage when I tweaked it.

I can offer £100.01 hehe...

tbh my GTX260, now overclocked still plays all the games on the latest settings at thisw rate I won't be upgrading until the new consoles are out, and therefore improving our PC ports!

Indeed, it was meant to replace the 4890 and at 150 squids is does. But remember when 4890s were 120-130? :) That's the sort of pricing that makes me love ATI.

With the current pricing I'm going 260 SLI...doubt I'll be disappointed as from all the figures I've seen I should be above 5870 performance...I just hope my PSU is up to it as it already makes a lot of noise on just 1 260 and is around 3.5 years old.

Above? I would have expected it to be slightly behind considering how a GTX295 compares to a 5870.

Or does the GTX295 use underclocked GTX275 GPUs?

You should be fine, I ran 260 SLi and overclocked i5 no problem with my 3 year old 700 watt Seasonic M12, although I don't know how many amps there are on the 12v rails of your Thermaltake tbh?

It's now running a 480 with a 260 as phsyX again with no probs :)

The 295 uses underclocked 240sp GPUs along with the 260s memory setup (896mb/gpu). It's a better card stock vs stock compared to SLI 260s, but I think the better cooling of 2 separate GPUs allows the 260s to perform better when clocked.

Good to hear. It's a Thermaltake toughpower 750W...4x18A rails so I think I should be fine.

I think it's 60A. Should be fine I think. It's just that my PSU makes a lot of noise under load....ideally I would have gone with 5770 CF but I got good prices on the 260s and they are great cards tbh...far better than 280s for OCers (had 3)....

If my PSU has problems I'll probably just sell the 260s and get 5770s....but that's not something I'm anticipating.

I have a 600W unit.

The overload tests showed it can actually deliver the full 600W on the 12V line and still supply 80W on the others while staying 80% efficient.

I would Xfire 5850 mate. I had the 5870 prior to the 5850 and there is no real world difference. Unless you're playing over 1920x1080 res, I doubt you'll need to Xfire it at all. I would defo pick the 5850 over the 5830 for sure though. Like everyone said, the 5830 is over priced.

Cheers.
