I have just been offered a new job with a competitor.

At the moment I live fairly close.
I (drive) leave home at 8.00am for a 9.00am start.
Leave at 5.30pm to get home for 6.15pm.
I get paid 12,000.
I enjoy my job and I really like the people that I work with.

I have been offered a job which is further away.
I will have to leave home at 7.00am for an 8.00am start.
I will be leaving at 6.00pm to get home for 7.00pm.
I will be paid 18,000.
New company, small numbers of staff.

What do you think?

My current company has offered to increase my salary to keep me, they indicated around 14-16,000.

Many thanks.

Hard one there. 12 to 18 is a big jump. But then again you are also working longer hours so not sure how much gain that is so if you can get 16,000 for the job you have now then I will take that.

But then thats just me. Its up to yourself in the end.

Don't always look at salary and times.

Think about career progression, and will this new role give you new experience to aid you r future working life?

The pay is better but the hours are longer, more travel (plus cost, do the sums to see what tool it has), and you may hate it and the people there.

WHat is your current role and what is the new role?

Yeah, take the gamble with the new job. It's a significant pay rise with a few more hours. You can always change if you don't like it.

Take the new job - unless the company you work for match the new salary.

No, dont. It isn't that simple.

Old company has indicated salary increase to 14-16k. Lets assume £15k. He also works 9-5.30 with an hour for lunch, so 7.5 hours a day so a 37.5 hour working week.

This is approx £7.69 an hour.

His new job though has longer hours - 8-6 with an hour for lunch. This is a 9 hour day so a 45 hour working week.

By co-incidence this works out at exactly the same hourly rate of £7.69 an hour.

Effectively then his existing employer has offered to match his new salary.

His existing job has shorter hours and a better work life balance.

Stay.

This - tell your current company what the competitor is offering, and suggest that you are seriously considering it due to the extra money.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see that your new company had offered you a better salary. In that case ask yourself whether the extra £2k is worth it, and whether you need the money.

As has been said, what are the two roles, and what chances of career progression will you have at the current place and the new place?

If you are literally moving from one company to the next without any change in role or change in career path/options, then I'd probably not risk the comfort of where I was for a potential £2k/annum rise (assuming you can get the current job up to £16k).

Its the same role (Trainee Quantity Surveyor on Day release at University, studying part time for a degree).

I have told my company about my offer and they said that they will get back to me tomorrow with a counter offer.

The opportunities I would say are fairly similar.

Its a tough decision :( , although I do ponder a bit!

Ahh ok same position.

If I was in your shoes then negotiate with your current employer for a pay raise, although don't cotton on that you definately want to stay with them, but then again don't push them away or annoy them.

Still quite a low wage @ 12k even for a trainee. How old are you ?

£16,000 and stay with your current company.

As fox has shown, it's technically the same salary anyway.

Fair one - just goes to show that you shouldnt just jump into things!

So going by your workings out - if his current employer offer him £16000, then he will effectively be getting more money p/h then the new job.

BUT, the main question is, does the OP mind working a few extra hours for an extra 2 grand? I know I would. But as said before - look at job progression, etc.

the extra distance also means extra fuel costs, canceling out some of that £2k extra per year

Its 30 Miles drive a day vs 70 Miles drive a day (new job)

ah maybe i didn't read it wrong :p *goes back to read it again*

EDIT: only 15mintues longer journey and 40 miles more!? lots of motorway then i take it, i guess that could be a fair fuel cost
