When is a PC not a PC...

It really used to grind my gears when I did tech support and every time I said "are you near your PC?" they would always "correct" me and say "oh, it's not a PC it's a mac", thanks because I forgot in the intervening 30 seconds since you told me it was a "mac". They always said it with a condescending tone too.

*Anyone else remember the old Tandy's and CPC's etc?

Yes, not heard the name Tandy in years. We used to have a Tandy shop in Edinburgh I remember going there many years ago :D

I've always thought of a MAC as a PC - its just another brand name, granted an expensive one though. You could probably build yourself a seriously kick ass windows based PC system for the price of a MAC out of the box imo ;)

Open up a PC and you see dusty circuit boards, cables, and, well, dust and fluff.
Open up an Apple Mac (although I've never done this) and I'm sure you'd see some alien technology suffused in an ambient pastel glow.

A Mac is a PC.

and since they started using intel processors they are IBM compatible so are in every sense of the word.

Dumb ass Mac users.

The fact Apple have blocked you from installing other operating systems on it doesn't make it better.

I always took it to just be PC = Personal Computer
Be it an IBM compatible, Tandy, Electron, Mac, C64 or whatever*.

However these days it tends to be taken as short for a desktop/mini tower as an IBM compatible, although the Mac is definitely still a PC just not often referred to that as it makes it seem so common to call it a PC for those that paid the "Mac tax" to get something that looks pretty:p**

**I suspect that'll get me skinned by the Apple users on here

My first PC was a Tandy TRS-80 Model I with 4kB RAM, RadioShack cassette recorder and Blue screen monitor - awesome!

So - I agree with Werewolf here : a Mac is a PC, as is a Windows-PC, as is a Linux-PC, as was/is an Commodore PET, Amiga, Apple, Apple II, Apple Lisa, Osborne I (sorry, just had to show I was an aeld fart!)

Yep a Mac is a PC although the lines between PCs and smartphones etc are a bit harder to draw.

The only difference is that intel mac's use EFI and charge 100% more than a Windows/linux computer.

I want an Amiga so I can turn my nose up at you all.

I would always expect someone to say "on my mac", yes they can do the same tasks, but I've never heard someone call their mac a pc.

It's macbook / mac in my mind

I guess that's one of Apple's biggest successes: they've created an identity for themselves that sets their computers apart from everyone else's in the mind of the consumer.

When it's a mac apparently...

Just had a nice discussion with someone on another forum about this and apparently i'm a microsoft fanboy because I suggested his mac may actually be a PC! (along with those running linux and Unix)

Isnt a Mac just Unix with a front end

They've had the same individual identity with the ipod.

The iPod is basically a crap mp3 player, with no drag and drop / mass storage for songs.

But people would refer to it as 'my ipod' and not 'my mp3 player'

Precisely. I have to admit that I have an iPod, but I've done away with Apple's standard firmware and installed Rockbox on it, which makes it a decent MP3 player

Don't like the way Microsoft tried to steal the word PC, also reminds me of the woman who wanted the fugly taskbar on windows 7 saying "Im a PC" no your a dumbass that broke a part of the OS.
