Im thinking of getting a Corsair 800D and the plan was to slap my Thermochill PA120.3 rad in the roof space in the provided fixings.

After a bot of reading i belive this is OK for the "new" spacings, but possibly not the "old" spacings

My Rad has ~130mm between corresponding fan mountings as follows:

Is this the "old" spacing ?

If so, is it still possible to mount in the roof without too much of a faff on ?

Cheers

You need to measure the space between the fan mounting holes ( where they mount 'next' to each other ) to determine new or old spacing, it will be something like 20mm+ , 17mm or 15mm ( centre to centre of hole ).

I would imagine it would be a bit of a faff on to be honest as with 15mm spacing the fans are touching each other & yours have quite a gap.If it was me i would buy a new radiator than cut up a £200+ case.

I can measure up tonight when I get home, although I have a reply elsewhere which is pretty certain that its the "old" spacing

So anyone here mounted an "old" spacing 360 in an 800D ?

Cheers

edit just seen the other posts, hmm, may look at a new 120.3 :(

I have a 25mm spacing PA120.3 and I will be ordering a 700D soon, identical roof to the 800D. My theory is that the radiator will be adequately supported by just the middle fan. I.e. will be just the middle fan which is screwed to the case *and* rad, and thus that fan will take the weight of the rad. To me those 4 screws will be more than enough to support it. Or you could attatch the rad directly to the case, just using those 4 holes, in which case it will *easily* support itself. Depends which side you want the fans really.

If it is fans screwed to case, you either then decide to put the other two fans so they line up with the rad holes, or the case fan holes. I guess the case fan holes would look better from the outside. With the two end fans will be lined up with the case holes and will be screwed to the case, but NOT screwed to the rad if you get me. Doing this you will end up with a small amount of underlap where the rad extends beyond the end fans but the effect of performance will be minor

You could also slot the fan holes in the two end fans to allow you to slide them so you can get all 24 screws in properly if you want but that is extra phaff and I personally don't think it matters.

Either way, this is worth trying before you go out and buy a 15mm spacing rad, you've got nothing to lose really.

Me personally, I am also going to cutout the stock fan grills in the 800/700D and fit a different grill. The main idea behind this for me is to take out the small recess in the stock grill to give a bit more clearance between the rad and gthe top of the mobo. From measurements I've seen a push/pull PA120.3 with 25mm thick fans is about 5mm too big to miss the mobo. Taking out the recess gives a bit more room to fit push/pull, escpecially is also wanting to use the gasket.

Thanks for the replies / suggestions

I think if I go for the case ill get a new 120.3 and sell on the old one (it is definately 25mm spacing, just measured it) - hopefully shouldn't have too much to make up the difference

Cheers

Hmm, possibly

So you would screw the "correct" spaced holes (in the top of the shroud) to the case ?

How is the rad then affixed to the shroud?

I'm not 100% sure how the shroud is attached to the rad, but I reckon it has something to do with the holes on the bottom of the shroud. This would definitely sort the problem out as I am too looking to do this myself. Plus you will get better performance from your rad using this as it helps with the the dead spot on the fans plus giving you the correct alignment (15mm).

Ah cheers (never noticed them before :P)

So,,,,,

Are these side screws, to fit the shroud to the rad, the same spacings on an old and new spacing PA120.3 ? :D

edit - Just measured an they are ~130mm spaced on the old spacing rads

Well I'm going to be doing this very soon. All my parts are ordered so will be building on Wed.

Definitely keep the rad you have and just buy the shroud for £15. ;)

These shrouds are meant to be mounted rad-shroud-fan, i.e. fans on the outside of the shroud. What you may have to do is have it rad-fan-shroud, such that the fans are directly mounted to the rad and the shroud goes over them so to speak. This will allow you to use the 15mm hole spacing on the shroud to support the rad. You will have to be careful however that the extra height of the shroud does not mean the bottom of the rad interferes with the mobo.

You could try mounting it rad-shroud-fan but my gut feeling is the height will be too much and it will clash with the mobo.

Yeh i agree with bubo, but i guess it all depends on the mobo, sometimes u can get lucky, i know on my P35 my heatpipes simply just get in the way. If they where not there, it would be fine to over hang the mobo.
