Leaving a dog at home during the day

My Dog is 8 years old & I've had him since Pup & I Never leave him in the day for longer than 5 hours, Any longer would be Cruel in my opinion.
If you had 2 dogs & they were say Over 3 years old then it would work as they would look after each other.
Dogs Need company.

This ^^

My girlfriend worked as a dog walker, she would have access to the homes and would walk the dogs for an hour while the owners were at work.

My sister runs a business doing the same (along with dog grooming and selling training aids, dog coats etc).

Yes it will work. You just have to put him in the kitchen at first and use puppy pad till he or she is house trained. We kept ours in the kitchen till ours was over a year old. We have his crate in the kitchen.

I can agree with this. My rescue Persian is just like a little dog. Follows me about, meows back at me when I'm speaking to him and loves being fussed. My other cat has a similar personality but can't meow.

I would love a dog, it pains me that I've not got one as I grew up with one and I miss him so, so much! However, I'm just not in the position to own one at the moment so I'm waiting for the day when I can get one.
Technically, I'm not out if the house too much right now but I live in a flat and don't have a secure garden so the kennels won't rehome to me. I'm also so looking for full-time work so there will come a point when I won't be in the house as often and, to me, that's a cruel thing to do to a dog.
 
My dog is left while me and the Mrs work, he has a long walk in the morning before we go to work and one in the evening.

Even when we are home he spends the vast majority of time asleep on the sofa or in his bed, so I assume he does the same when we are not there.

He never wets or messes indoors, unless he is ill or something.

I'll make sure to have a play with him everytime I come home while dinner is being made.

I leave my dog (collie/lab mongrel) at home for 9-10 hours a day 5 days a week. I deem it less cruel than sending him to the dogs home (he was a family dog till I split up from wife) he goes for a walk before & after (sometimes he comes running with me too) and I cannot remember the last time he left a deposit for me (although he did at first when he was not used to being alone for so long) to this day if I leave something likea yellow pages out though I will come back to find it decimated.

It is not ideal but the lesser of 2 evils

We were told to get puppy pads and forgot, as it turned out he had pretty much trained himself by the time he was 4 months old. When we picked him up from the rescue centre we were told that everytime he went to the toilet he would go as far from where he slept as he could. Apart from about 5 small accidents when we first got him, he's been fine.

Ditto on the crate, he now takes to lying in there when we are in the kitchen or outside having a smoke and he doesn't want to go out with us.
 
As others have already said, 8-9 hours is much too long to be leaving a dog home alone.
I'd feel cruel if our dog was left for anywhere near that long.
Bottom line is it's not fair on the dog and impossible for a puppy (if you want it to be trained)

No offence but just because lots of people say so it doesn't make it so, it's just their opinion on the matter. As I have said, our dogs have great lives and get left for 8-9 hours without any issues.
 
Why get a dog if your going to leave him alone most of the day? Dogs are social animals and many suffer from seperation anxiety if left alone that long, especially neutered dogs.
 
It's like kids; if you can't spend the quality time with 'em DON'T HAVE 'EM!!!

They are not toys for your convenience; think again!
 
My dog goes into deep decline if the house is empty for more than just a couple hours. Howling his head off, the works. They hate it.
