No picture on HD 5850 card

Afternoon all,

I recently bought a new system ( see my other post for the full details as it was specced with the help of people here)

I've put everything together but have hit a small problem. I get no display whatsoever out of my Radeon HD 5850 card.

I have an LG LCD panel which take a VGA input, so I've plugged the supplied adapter into both ports on the card and hooked up my monitor to no avail. It just goes into Power Saving Mode. I see no POST ( Assuming this thing is actually posting ok), and no other signs of life on the screen at all. I cannot get into the BIUO to tweak anything.

I /think/ the machine is actually trying to start up ok, as if I start it with the Windows 7 install CD in the drive it looks like it is being read as if the install is in process.

I used this same monitor hookup and adapter on my old PC powered by a Radeon X1950 card. I've also tried using adapter that came with the card and it made no difference...

I don't /think/ I'm doing something daft, but it's certainly possible. Do I need a DisplayPort cable to run this monitor now, instead of the single adapter?

Any advice on this one will be /greatly/ appreciated!

Rob

P.S. the monitor itself works ok as if I plug it into the VGA port on my laptop it displays ok.

Have you tried taking the 5850 out and then putting it back in just to make sure it's in the pci-e slot correctly?
Is it in the top pci-e slot?
Do you have a tv in the house with a hdmi input that you could try the pc on using a hdmi cable?

The adaptor should work fine but i have never used a dvi - vga one but i use a dvi - hdmi adaptor. some people do have problems with the dvi - hdmi adaptors as there are different versions. As i put in my last post if the 5850 has a hdmi port if you have a tv with a hdmi port you could use that just to make sure the card is working.

Unfortunately the rest of my home equipment is pretty old. I have nothing with an HDMI port to test with...

The card is in the top slot, which is flagged as being the PCI-E x16 slot.

I'll also see if I can borrow a different PCI-E graphics card. My old card was AGP so I cannot even put that in to see if I get a picture.

Ok, an update for everyone.

It turns out that the problem was actually with the power connectors for th4e card.

I had used the two cables that came with the graphics card, allowing them to be powered from the old IDE drive Molex connectors.

I took out these adapters and instead connected two PCI power connectors from a cable directly from the power supply. The system booted straight away!
