8800 GTX replacement

Hi, a friend's graphics card has borked and I've been asked to advise on a replacement. It's an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX. I've been out of the loop regarding gfx hardware for a while now and wondered what would be a current equivalent? Of course they want to spend as little as possible - I suggested looking on ebay for a second-hand one but apparently 8800 GTX's are going for £150.

Basically I need to recommend the cheapest replacement for an 8800 GTX to get similar performance. Any suggestions?

This will offer 8800GTX beating performance for not very much money. Alternatively the card mentioned within the above post will be good if you have that ammount to spend.

I'd recommend the 5770 if your friend has the money spare.

It's a good deal better then the 8800 GTX.

If not the 4850 also recommended above will also be an improvement.It's a small improvement though.

Are you sure? My friends 4850 barely beats my 8800GTS 512.

Agreed. I have a 8800gtx and a 4850 in near identical rigs. Once you turn up the AA the 4850 starts to trail the 8800gtx.
