for a 330i E46? oil light came on, on the way home from work, just had a look and the oil light is not coming on again. Want to get some oil so long to top up when required.

I remember Fox said to use Castrol Edge 0W30 but Opie Oils says to use 5w30 so I'm confused

Also is Castrol Edge good?

Castrol used to supply an in boot 1 litre pack for the M3 so I guess you should be OK with Castrol.
The VAG Castrol Edge is 5w30. I guess Opie suggested 5w30 as that is the grade they make.
Castrol is nothing more than a name now however. It has been shut down by B.P. (in the UK)

You can use 5w30 to top up but it isn't LL01 approved, whereas 0w30 is.

It's up to you but put it this way - factory will was Castrol SLX Longtec II 0w30, and Edge is the consumer name for this.

 didn't you only buy this car 3-4 days ago? Presumably the oil level was fine when you bought it? Has it used over a litre of oil in 3 days?

I'll check the dipstick tomorrow to make sure the level is alright. It could be the oil level sensor too, reading around it seems this is a common problem. If so then I'll have it looked at the next oil service in 6300 miles according to the indicator.

Where is the cheapest to get this oil from, Opie oils + delivery doesn't work out all that much cheaper than halfords?

If the oil level sensor is faulty you will get a flashing oil level sensor light after you start the engine, or you'll get no light at all.

If it comes on when the engine is turned off, you need to top your oil up.

Can also use Mobil One 0w40 (useful if you have a Costco membership).

I heard that it was advised against using Mobil 1 0W40 in modern BMWs?

A friend refuses to put it in his E46 M3 despite the fact that he could get it for free!

Erm, I wouldn't put Mobil 1 0w40 in my e46 M3 either... it MUST have the special Castrol 10w60 or an equivalent unless you have a penchant for buying new S54s.

There is no issue at all in using Mobil 1 0w40 in other modern BMWs - it is LL04 approved. I used it in my 2002 330d problem free for 43,000 miles (likely used it during at least some of the 97,000 before that). Sytner used to provide it during my services until I started supplying my own oil.

5W-30 is LL04 approved. Same performance requirements as LL01 just different SAPs level.

I would use the 0W-30 though, as it's High SAPS.

Shut down?

It's actually LL01 approved, which in theory makes it even more suitable for a 2002 330 of either petrol or diesel variety..

Bought some Castrol Edge 0W30 earlier as oil was on the minimum level so chucked in a litre, level now at about 3/4. For some reason the engine feels so much smoother (if that's even possible) and is all purry. Driving along I feel the sun smiling and beaming down on me, singling me out - all is good with the world :)

Had to get it from Halfruads £45 as didn't want to wait for Opie Oils to deliver - guy behind me in the queue was like

random: 'ye mate that oil is the business'
me: 'oh ye? I hear good things about it'
random: 'it's very good, what car you have?'
me: 'BMW'
random: 'M3?'
me: 'nah 330i'

queue me strolling to my now washed and gleaming Topaz Blue beaut, oil in hand, smile in my heart :D

:)

So, have you put through the paperwork for your membership to the "FOX AND THE BMW CREW!!11!" yet?
