My trusty and much-loved 8800GT is showing signs of failing, so I'm looking to replace it ASAP. System specs are below, main monitor is a 24" 1920x1200 LCD (with a secondary 19" 1280x1024 LCD as an extended desktop). Games that I dabble with include Borderlands, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 and other Bioware RPGs, and a bit of COD2. Budget is £250-300.

The 5850 a great choice no doubt, saying that there are GTX 470's going for 275 ish if you hunt around and want Nvidia instead.
Although the extra money for pretty much the same perfomance (Give or take) is your choice.

Thanks for the input. I've no preference either way; the 8800GT was an upgrade from an X800 GTO so I've good memories of both camps. I don't need bleeding-edge performance; so long as it's stable and has good image quality I'll be happy. :)

BFG do come with a 10 year warranty (once registered), but they no longer sell any cards in Europe, so you'd have to import it, and the warranty is only valid in the country of sale IIRC.

Some people have said they've managed to transfer a warranty when selling the card second hand, but I don't think this is always possible, certainly not protocol.

You can't go wrong with the 5850 so.

It sure looks a lot of bang for the buck.... very tempting.

p.s. I'll be attempting a warranty replacement from BFG, but given that a mate waited 3 months to get a working replacement for his 9800GTX recently I don't want to have to rely on it.

If you get a replacement for your 8800, you could always use it as a phsyx card.

I never buy a graphics card until it gives me double the frame rates at the res I play at, I have an 8800gtx and a 5850 is round twice the framerate and more in a lot of cases so yeah I wouldnt settle for anything less.

I think Bledd meant his card he has now will be under warranty so he should send it back to them. Should get a gts250 I reckon.

Sure, they're still honouring the warranties for Europe anyway it seems. I'm mighty glad about that, as my trusty GTX280 is still chugging along. In fact, it's still a damn fast card, though I can't imagine getting anything back but some refurbished tat at the moment, nvidia parts are like hens teeth.

You never know, if it goes on long enough you'd probably get a gtx470 as a replacement.

Eventually I guess. I have a 5770 I won in a competition and I'm wondering if I should crossfire it with another and ditch the GTX280, though I'm finding it hard to part with, it's a great card! That warranty is really appealing too, the 5770 has none. Decisions!

the gtx470 is probably a good bet for you, though the 5850 is a fantastic card too. Either way you go I'm sure you'll not be disappointed!
