Job Interview, what would you do?

I need a bit of advice on what you would do in this situation...

I was called yesterday afternoon about a job interview at another company and the interview is tomorrow. I was on lunch when they called so I went back to the office and requested it off as annual leave. I was told this morning that I couldn't take it off as we are too busy (Ash cloud and I work in travel). Nobody in the office is off.

I rang the company I have the interview with and they advised that they wouldn't be able to re-arrange unfortunately.

The reason I need the whole day off is because the interview is in a different city and it's not as easy to get to.

What would you do in this siutation?
 
At such short noticed I would have pulled a sicky - but now you've requested it as annual leave I'd have to base the decision on how deseperate I was wanting to leave.
 
I was in your position not too long ago.

Couldn't pull a sicky as I'd requested it off as leave and as much as I want to change jobs, I'm not about to risk my current job for an interview that may not lead onto anything.

I had to forget about the interview and however annoying it may be, I looked at it from a 'maybe it wasn't for me' perspective.

Good luck whatever happens though.

As above request a telephone interview, if they can't do that and you really want to attend then explain to your employeer that you have a personal matter you need to attend to (which can't be moved) and if you can't take it as holiday you need to take it as a personal/emergency day.

I've asked to do that before when I had difficulty getting to an interview, apparently it doesn't look good when they've offered you a face to face and you decline for a phone interview.

Your best bet is to **** your pants and go home early, it'll create a more convincing story when you phone in sick tomorrow :D

Don't take a sickie/phone in sick it will do you no favours and just make you look like a liar. Just tell them that you cannot come in due to a personal emergency, would be suprised by any employer not allowing this on an exception basis.
 
I was in your position last year and its a tight one. Id ring them up and ask if a telephone interview would be ok and rearrange the interview. Explain that a couple of days notice is not acceptable. In the end i booked my interview times as anual leave and if they asked I said dentist, doctors or just a day off with family.

If its a job you really want then pull a sicky but remeber your in a job atm and if your current employeer finds out they may just hang you for it.

maybe they're a company that doesn't do telephone interviews. If I was an employer, I would prefer face to face than over the phone I suppose.

I just wished there was a way I could go to it :( but I suppose there isn't as I can't get time off so I'll need to stop going on about it.

... take time off with depression :p
 
If you care about the new job at all, tell your current employer you have a job interview and you won't be in tomorrow and they can either let you have annual leave or discipline you as they see fit.
