when having a conversation on the phone (BT) i can faintly hear someone elses telephone conversation in the background.
It happens all the time no matter who i call.
we have BT broadband with filters fitted to all sockets.

any ideas ?

It is a conversation that hasn't been had yet, what you are hearing is remnants of that conversation, in Layman's terms they are Future Echoes. :P

Sure it's not picking up radio or something daft? Sometimes speakers have a habit of doing that.

The inside of most BT junction boxes is like spaghetti junction!
Crossed lines used to result from the electromechanical nature of the phone switching systems used years ago, I think.
Nowadays it's something more technological, like crosstalk or something.

It's lines which aren't insulated properly and are in close proximity. Your line is picking up electromagnetic interference from their signal/convo and, as your phone has no way of differentiating between your signal and theirs - because as far as it's concerned it's one and the same - you will hear both. It used to happen all the time back in the day, but it's less common now.

Or you have ear aids. pervert.

I used to have this but it stopped about 8 years ago when they had work carried out on the junction box near us.

I put it down to badly shielded cables and interference.

Call BT fault finding on 150.

Essentially, it's a crosstalk problem. Engineer will swap you to a spare pair.

I reckon listen in, get some gossip, work out if she is fit and then blackmail. But yeah you could just get BT to fix it. As said it will be that your copper is touching someone elses copper.

I know crosstalk affects DSL but I think to mess up voice it would probably have to be touching with it being much less sensitive.
