I've been looking for a MK2 for a couple of months now. This one has popped up quite near me. In the advert he asks to have an offer made to him rather than him state a price.

These quite often pop up on pistonheads at about £1500. Though to be honest I'm not sure that there's a great difference between those that pop up for £1500 and those that go for £2500. It seems to be what the seller deems it worth to them.

What would be your offer?

id offer £1000

back when i was looking for one they all seemed about 1k im guessing the prices seem to have gone sky high in the last couple of years.

i ended up with a mint 8v gti. it had done 90,000 miles full respray and full history for £450 i know 16v is rare but is it really worth close to 2grand???

I would not be willing to pay more than a grand for a Mk2 GTI unless it had some very special kit. Kate's D plate 8v was £350:

mk2 seem to be going up in price, i got one about half a year ago for £300, just sold it for £1000, that was green 8v 109miles

good little money making cars they seem to be.

half decent nik 16valvers are getting rare...i'm picking up an oak green one on H plate tomorrow which i paid 1600 for. I've been looking for a few months now as something to play with on a weekend and real minters go for anywhere between 2 grand and 3500. On the face of it this one looks okish but would need a test drive and good going over before parting with cash.

I predict that one will make at least 1400 without knowing what the owner wants reserve.

yeah i got rid of mine in similar condition for £1500 few months back. It was advertised for nearly two days before it sold.

The prices seem to be all over the place at the moment, but as a rule they seem to be climbing. If it were to sell mine tomorrow I'd probably stick it up for £1500, but I've no intention to sell it, especially now that prices are increasing.

Sounds a bit tatty to me, needing a new rocker box cover means it's leaking oil as well.

He only stated it needs a new gasket, not the actual rocker cover. Which means he is aware it's leaking oil and saw fit to include it in the ad, which is more than what most people would do. Besides, replacement gasket is a simple job if you have half an idea of what you're doing.

As for the price, I wonder how long ago that D plate 8v went for £350. I challenge you to find a similarly priced MK2 in today's market. As has been stated; MK2s seem to be climbing in price. When I started looking a couple of months ago they were fetching £1000-1200, now a clean example will fetch £1500, people are paying this price for these cars now.

And it's sod's law that the ones which are going for the lower amounts are at the other end of the country.
