Laser eye surgery - one year on (and a bit)

Thanks for posting your experiences Jonny. I've just started wearing glasses to work -0.75L & -0.50R and some of the lads are very much of the mindset that they would never wear glasses and would be straight down to get laser surgery (think it's an ego thing) if they had poor eyesight.

Best wishes for over the next 3 months as they monitor you and hopefully things won't get any worse.

I've thought if my eyes got worse I'd consider it as I don't think my correction is poor enough to warrant getting it done yet. I'm also on a contact lens trial and found them to be excellent for work due to the extra peripheral vision over the glasses although I have to take them out if I'm on the pc as I find they irritate me.
 
Im booked into the optical Express in leeds on 1st May for my eyes doing, really looking forward to it, and manage to get £200 of the asking price.:D
 
I work for the local council, and they offer a discount about 5%. But I pushed it a bit further, and said their were other clinics, that could offer me discounts. Just need to bargin them down.

Am surprised he had it done at -7 as the risks get greater the weaker the eye due to having to take more away not reshape the eye.

I was thinking of getting it done but am -6.25 & -5-5. I asked a friend of mine who is a doc, he spoke to a friend who is an eye surgeon and basically put me of due to long term complications, no one knows what effect it will have on the eye in 20 - 30 years. Also even with Lasik you cannot joint certain professions such as fire service.

The one thing he said and still sticks in my mind is the number of doctors etc who wear specs. If it was such a risk free operation........
 
Laser eye surgery doesn't last. It has an expectance of around 10 years. Eyes keep changing shape as you get older. Lack of elastisticity, and muscle degeneration.
 
I think I am gonna stick to my "All Day All Night" specsavers contact lenses, I never wear glasses :)

You can have it redone though as part of your treatment.

I have bit the bullet and lost a few moths from my wallet this afternoon. I'm having it done 6th May!!

There is an element of risk with anything. One thing I took comfort with is that with the advances in treatment/low risk they perform the correction of both eyes at the same time :)
 
My mate had it done and said it was the best thing ever. He'd go thru the discomfort to have it done again, when needed.

I can't have laser surgery cos I have keratoconus. So I have to wear contacts or have Intacs implants.

I believe you can have Intacs implants for short sightedness. Much safer than laser surgey and reversible and upgradable :)

Optical Express WILL give you a complementary pair of glasses if you've had laser treatment and require them after the procedure.

Edit: Le Petit Lapin, they laser the surface of the eye. It doesn't go "into" the eye. "Something going horribly wrong" is a common misconception. But when one person says it, and then another, then eventually it becomes believable and made up stories start to crop up.

Although admitidly the older tech of the 60s did cause quite a few problems. Which is why that tech is no longer used. :)

No offence Ricochet but I have a close friend who has had serious complications with sight correction surgery so it's not all fun and games and it CAN happen.

PS the surgery was last september with the lastest methods.

I had mine done 2 years ago now and just like Jonny69, mine have settled a bit since the operation. I still have 20/20 vision though, it's just that I did have even better straight after the op.

Overall though it's probably the best thing I ever did, I can't imagine wearing glasses or contacts anymore

I've been wearing glasses since i was about 8 and now at about -5.5 in each eye they seem to have stopped going anywhere. People dont realise what its like to wake up and have to reach for your glasses because your eyes are so bad.

I have thought about getting mine zapped but at the moment its still too expensive for me, maybe in 5 years it'll be cheaper and i'll know if my eyes are changing any more.

I'd love to lose the dependance on glasses though i have no issue wearing them. I did have contacts but cant wear them at the office for 12 hours because my eyes dry out. Now i just have a set that i wear if im going out or playing sports or something.
 
I wear contacts but am considering getting lasered at some point (might wait a few years for my eyes to settle)

I sitll don't understand what the numbers mean though (at my last check up my eyes were both -1.00)

He's there right now folks, just walking in the door, now sat in the waiting room, time to think about it, time for the nerves to set in, he's just starting to crap his pants about it right about... now... :D

I'm due another checkup in a week or so. I don't think mine have got any worse but I think I will string the appointments out a bit longer just to make sure. I'm still legal and still 20/20 according to the appointment last month.
 
Best thing ever. One of the greatest things for me is, when you go on summer holiday to the beach etc., not having to worry about your contacts and glasses, you can just go into the water and open your eyes without having to worry about your lenses. If you scuba dive, some of the training you do involves opening your eyes under water without your mask on, which cannot be done if you're wearing contacts (unless it's an emergency of course!).

The biggest difference in terms of acuity has come with my night vision. Shapes are a lot more detailed and colours seem a lot more vivid at night, compared to when I wore my contacts / glasses. 10 months post op and I'm L 6/4 R 6/5 from a starting point of -2.5 and -3.0 with some astigmatism.

Thats not true, it can be done. You dont have to open your eyes when you do a mask clear, you just keep them closed until the water is blown out of the mask.
