When you approach the voting station, normally just outside (directly outside the door), you will probably be approached by someone in a nice suit, who very pleasently asks

'Sorry I just need to see your voting card please'.

He is not breaking any laws. He looks official. The voting staff can see what they are doing and may have even provided them chairs etc.

He will very strongly insinuate you HAVE to show him your card as part of the voting process. He will be working for one of the political parties, or sometimes all the parties club together to employ such a guy and share results.

Of course all the sheeple hand him their card just thinking 'slightly scary voting, go with what official looking bloke says', he notes their unique number on his pad of paper, smiles, then gives you your card back and you wander in to actually vote.

What he is actually doing is from your unique number he knows your name and address and most importantly the fact that you bothered to vote (the official records will not release this information so they are just collecting it informally).

This leads to two things. The next election

1) You will get calls on your door more, more leaflets, more junk jammed through your door, as they know you vote. They know you are going to bother.
2) You will get stamped post directly sent to you, YOUR name and address used rather than 'the occupier' as they can get your name and address FROM your number legally - this stuff will of course ON its envelope NOT have any indication it is party literature, meaning you have to open the mail (not throw directly in the bin) and have to waste your precious time deducing it's propaganda and (they hope) maybe reading some of it.

You see political parties do not want to bother with non-voters. It's a waste of their time and resources.

Just basically don't fall for the STRONGLY INSINUATED LIE that the bloke asking to see everyone's voting card is some mandatory step to making your vote. It's not. He's relying on you 'seeing authority' and going with the flow. And setting yourself up for a load more harrassment next election.

If in doubt, ask the person if the action is mandatory in order for you to cast your vote. If not - by refusing to play ball you will get a LOT less grief next election. And this does not effect your voting rights one bit. Don't just be scared and go along with official looking bloke. The moment you ask the question, he will bottle it and tell you the truth if he is just data mining ..

99% of the people I saw voting just handed over their card numbers like dumb schmucks because people just want to obey authority. I'd personally rather be on the 'not worth bothering him at next election' list thanks. What about you?

Britters.

ps. You DO have to hand your card to the final people who give you the voting slip. If you handed your card to ANYONE before then - congratulations, you've just given a load of information unnecessarily to private parties because the bloke in the suit sounded like authority ...

Is there actually a level to which politicians WONT stoop to these days, in order to try and get into power? :(

Depressing. I'll avoid anyone trying that, thanks for the heads up.

Yup I'd avoid. Be POLITE to them (they may well be just employed and not even know why they're doing what they're doing). The moment you say 'Do I HAVE TO give you the number to vote?' they'll collapse and let you past ..

Unless its the first time you are voting, you should know that anyone asking to see your slip is up to something. It should only be handed to the people inside who will tick you off the list and give you a ballot paper.

2nd time, never been asked before.

You don't even need to hand your card over to the people inside either.

I wish some candidates came to my door, not one did. Got sod all literature too!

They all already write to me with full name and I get a load of junk and calls, must have done this last election :(

edit: actually yeah isn't your name and address availble to all on the electoral roll anyway? - I've no idea how this stuff works.

It sometimes happens on the way out, people ask who you voted for, they ask for your address/no. It’s normal. Tell them politely to wait for the result or better still just ignore them and walk on by. :)
