Yeah, freedom to choose who you want to vote for (including nobody), but the not the freedom to not vote. But then we've been round this circle plenty of times already.
Yes, and it's still as lame as the first time it was mentioned.

I agree that there are compelling reasons to vote; unfortunately I have free will and a choice. How I choose to use these is up to me and I will not let anyone sway my opinion because I am more than capable of forming my own decisions.
People routinely show how stupid they are with freedom of choice.
So people using reasoning can't sway your opinion? Must be a strange world you live in.

And by forcing them into a ballot there is zero risk of a party like the BNP getting a protest vote?

You would still have the choice to spoil your card. Which would achieve more than simply not bothering to do anything.
You defend your right, under a democracy, not to vote, yet you would deny a party the chance of being elected due to a democratic vote?
I advocate electoral reform to a more PR based system, which would ultimately result in parties like the BNP getting more power. That doesn't mean I want to see them in power. It does however mean voting would be better reflected in our government.
I'm not voting because I don't view one party above any other.
To me they all have equally big downsides. Tories are too harsh on the poor and lenient on the rich, Labour are too lenient on the poor and harsh to the rich. Lib dems want to take our defence, UKIP want to isolate us from the rest of the world, the list goes on. They're all big downsides in my opinion, I'm 21 and I don't know what my future holds. I'm not currently rich or poor, I don't know if I'll be unemployed or rich in the next 4 years. I've not known my country without a nuclear defence, so it worries me. I understand the importance of keeping the balance between our independence and our unity with other nations, but I don't particularly want to sway harshly in either direction.
For the above reasons I will adapt to the opinions of the opinionated. I still have my own opinions, and I have still made a choice, and my choice, as others, was still based on those opinions.
Some people don't vote because they're happy to adapt, not because they lack respect or understanding of our freedoms or our democracy. War was waged to keep our freedoms, but freedom != being told what to do.

Like I said be very carefull with this, they put all the 'spoiled papers' in a pile and then argue about which box you could possibly have wanted if they can agree on a box you will have cast a vote without knowing it. Unless they put a box on for none of the above then the only option if you want to abstain is to not show up.
Cumpuslory voting would be a terrible shame in my opinion, this is a free country and we should be free to choose if we want to engage in the political system of the country or simply let it be. Those who died in the great wars dies fighting for our freedom which is something far greater than being told to put a cross in a box.
There are a lot of things you aren't free to do or not do in this country, these restrictions don't make it any less a free country. I think it is the duty of all citizens to vote, and I'd be fine with seeing an abstention option alongside compulsory voting. The freedom you have is the choice of who you want to run your country, not exercising that dishonours the memory of those who fought against tyranny and oppression (IMO).
My families, friends and my life is fine and tbh, you are out of order to say my family and friends life isn't decent atm by labelling it could be better, just because your life sucks doesn't mean everyone elses life does.

Too many posts that are full of **** today tbh and lead by assumptions of someone elses life, basically too many if's and but's and mainly because your worried your party won't win.
You've made a choice to vote, other people have simply made the choice to not vote, there's no point getting riled up about it because things won't change anytime soon.
The childish behaviour is throwing a tantrum over people who choose not to vote, and wth? Where did that come from, i stated my families and friends lives are fine currently, nowhere does that indicate their lives are better than anyone elses currently, but the fact you appear to be using the election as a way to improve *your* life is selfish because i think that's why you want people to vote, to improve *your* way of life.
None of the people i know vote, and that's not going to change in the future.
It's a shame politics is called politics, that it has this murky image and seems to be well-connected to corruption. I suppose that's the influence of power for you.

It's not my way of life is it? Its every body that lives in the democratic state in which you [should] vote. Stop thinking of yourself for a minute. I want people to vote because we live in a democracy. Stop being so bloody short sighted.
